Times Quick Cryptic 1060 by Mara

On reflection I’m not sure why this delayed me 4 minutes over my target 10 but it did. There seemed to be something of a world-trip going on today with references to Sudan, Spain, India, Hungary, Egypt, Zambia, Belize and Estonia. Also the Mediterranean, Central America, and generic terms such as world, earth, country and nation. Interested as always to hear how others fared.

As usual definitions are underlined in bold italics, {deletions are in curly brackets} and [anagrinds, containment, reversal and other indicators in square ones]

  1. in 8.55 minutes. As per Jack a very geographical puzzle.

I started in SPAIN 9ac and landed happily in 2dn BELIZE.

COD 4dn CLOTHES HANGER – I am rather partial to long anagrams.

WOD I also like 21dn MAYO – but have never been to Ireland.

A pleasant start to the week.

  2. 46 mins, apparently not on Mara’s wavelength, or maybe just Monday.

About 30 minutes on toenail, grenade, go to seed and LOI clothes hanger.

    COD Go to seed.

Worth having a go at the 15×15 today, finished in 1.39 including work interruptions.

  3. Often finish in 12-15 mins. Today’s took 30. NW corner particularly difficult, I thought.
  4. 22:15, a good start to the week. Spent too long on UNSTEADY, COD GO TO SEED.

Digit = fingers or toes, but not often used for the latter.

Was tempted by ENGARDE, as in fencing for GRENADE. Was also desperate to get “ankh” in at 20a as a revered Egyptian symbol, it feels very crosswordy.

Based on the advice herein, I will try the 15×15 now.

  5. While solving this it felt like I was making quite hard work of a relatively straightforward puzzle (mainly due to not being able to spot/solve the many anagrams). However I completed it in 13.27, which is quicker than average for me. LOI 18d, COD 13d.
    Thanks for the blog
  6. Pretty quick today helped by the countries and long anagram. Ironically, Belize second from last one in given I went there on holiday in October. COD to GO TO SEED.
  7. Can’t believe as a medic I didn’t get Artery. 18d. Otherwise WORLDly and easier than some QCs.
  8. Took me a bit longer than usual, but I think that was me rather than the setter. ARTERY took all the checkers to spot as I couldn’t think of a 4 letter word for pretentious and was going through my list of barrels and ships before I realised we were on blood vessels.

  9. I took ages over this one, and resorted to electronics in the end. I think it was an accumulation of small difficulties rather than major problems

  10. I needed about 22 minutes for this with LOI Toenail going in unparsed at first.
    I worked it out eventually.
Not easy for me. COD to Clothes Hanger. David
  11. This was a slow 40mins solve for me as well, with the SE causing most of the problems. Nothing really difficult, but just couldn’t get into the flow of the clues today. No doubt it’s a chestnut, but 13d gets my CoD vote. Invariant
  12. I managed about 8 of these and then gave up. No where near in the right wavelength. The worst I’ve had for a long time. 🙁
  13. I’m a day behind with puzzles due to an enjoyable holiday with bracing walks. Took ages to see my LOI, ARTERY. Glad to see I wasn’t alone. Started with STEP and took 12:45 to complete, so over my target time. Nice puzzle. Thanks MARA and Jack.
