Owing to various unfortunate contingencies, the management here at TftT only just learned of the publication of these historical puzzles.   They are being published to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the very first Sunday Times puzzle in 1925, and are accompanied by an article by Sunday Times puzzle editor (and founder of TftT) Peter Biddlecombe.  

For the past few years I’ve helped our TfTT contributor St John Daly (aka astonvilla1) with test solving, editing and publishing his annual political crossword for the site Political Betting (which he has been producing since 2006). Well that was fun! I was surprised to find I’m not as much of a fossil as I thought. Unlike the usual crosswords, your reference for answers is Google, not the usual dictionaries.

Sometimes themed puzzles are more difficult because of the problem of getting the theme words in.   However, in the case of this puzzle, most of the theme was in the clues, not the answers.   In fact, it would have been entirely possible to clue this puzzle without any reference to current events.
