Times Jumbo 995 (25 Aug 2012) – A Bank Holiday bonus

Solving time: 1:34:16

I found this possibly a little easier than normal, although probably not quite as easy as the other one published on the same day (994). An hour and a half is a fairly quick time for me for a Jumbo. I would think 1:45 to 2 hours is probably about my average. I certainly can’t be compared to Helen’s 21 minutes!

There wasn’t much I had to look up, which makes a change for a Jumbo, and nothing really by way of quibbles.

cd = cryptic def., dd = double def., rev = reversal, homophones are written in quotes, anagrams as (–)*, and removals like this

Across
1 BEAN + BAG
5 DOWN + FALL
9 S(PACE)S
13 TROUBLE AND STRIFE – Cockney rhyming slang for wife.
14 AT ONCE = ACE about (ON after T)
16 BAGEL = BAby + LEG (on, cricket side) rev
17 TR(ACER)Y
18 IS + HER(WOO)D – Christopher Isherwood is probably best known for The Berlin Stories which was adapted into the musical Cabaret.
19 OVER + S(P)ILL
21 BRITTEN = BITTERN with the R moved
22 PITTA = AT TIP rev
23 KEATS = KATE’S with the E moved
25 DISHONEST = (HEDONISTS)*
27 UMBRAGE = jUMBo + RAGE – I got this from the definition and the checkers. I’m not convinced about JUMBO for ‘boss’, but it’s the best that I can come up with. If anyone has any better wordplay, please let me know. It’s not JUMBO, it’s UMBO, which is the boss on a shield. This was not a word I knew, but now that I do it makes much more sense. Thanks to Jerry for pointing it out.
29 REIGNITES = REIGN + I + SET rev
31 SPAN + IS + HARM + ADA
34 LIGHT + FINGERED
35 LOOK(AFT)ER
37 LA(MAR)CK – Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was a naturalist and early pioneer of evolution, before Darwin.
39 accounT + RAN + SLATE
42 DEMOB = OM in BED all rev – To be ‘demob happy’ originally meant to be excited about imminent demobilization at the end of the war, but now can be applied to release from any kind of long-term service.
43 mInOaN dItCh
45 LOW-DOWN = WiDOW in LONdon
47 CATHARSIS = (AS THIS CAR)*
49 UNCHECKED – dd – A chess term for when one’s king is not threatened.
50 Y + UP + PIES
52 CACTI – hidden
54 ISRAEL = “IS RAIL”
55 RETURNING OFFICER – cd – he/she announces the results in an election
56 NUDITY = (UNTIDY)*
57 SN + wATCHED – Sn is the chemical symbol for Tin
58 ELEVATE = VAT in mELEE
Down
1 B + E + TAB + LOCKER
2 ALONe + Goal
3 BUBBLES – dd – A painting by Sir John Everett Millais which became famous when it was used to advertise Pears soap
4 GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE – not very cryptic def
5 DON + CAR + LOS – An opera by Giuseppe Verdi
6 WASTE = “WAIST” – report is the homophone indicator. It took me ages post-solve to spot the wordplay.
7 FORTY-FIVE – dd – 45rpm was the traditional speed that singles (remember them?) spun at, and ‘The Forty-five’ refers to the Jacobite Rising of 1745 in which Bonnie Prince Charlie led an army of rebellious Scots against the English.
8 LEFTIST = LEFT 1ST
10 PITPROP = P/P about IT (appeal) + PRO (for)
11 C(ON + SORT)IA
12 SPEED CAMERA – cd
15 WHEN + PUSH + COMES TO + S + HOVE – ‘drunken cat’ for PUSH made me smile.
20 ERASING = SIN in E-RAG (online newspaper)
21 BROWSER – dd – To browse is to graze on leaves or other vegetation
24 S(ENA)TORy
26 T(W)ILL
28 BARM + AID – I don’t know BARM was froth
30 SIGHT – dd
32 ADDISON = ADD 1 SON – Joseph Addison was an essayist & politician. He co-founded The Spectator.

40 AGONY AUNT – cd
41 AUCTIONED = (EDUCATION)* – I liked the definition ‘hammered away’
44 C + eLEMENT – I always assumed clement meant fine, as of weather, but apparently not.
46 WIDGEON = W + I’D + (GONE)*
48 ARCH-FOE = (FOR EACH)*
51 PINCH – dd
53 COCO + A

  1. 54′, quick for me. I realized just now that I’d never gone over the ones I’d queried, so I’m all the more grateful to learn of, say, BUBBLES and DEMOB happy; ‘demob’ I knew, but not the happy bit. Lamarck’s idea of ‘evolution’, though, included the inheritance of acquired characteristics.
  2. 18:55 here for a nice straightforward puzzle.

Interesting that BETA BLOCKER also appeared as the answer to 1dn in the T2 Jumbo using the same grid.
