(I believe I’m blogging on the correct Jumbo this time – apologies for the dual posting on 963, which sghanson had already covered beautifully).

My solving time was around 22 minutes. I found this one mostly straightforward, but I had to check the meaning of TABARET, and I reckon HALF SEAS OVER is a pretty archaic euphemism for tipsy!

39 PLATINUM BLONDE – (all pointed)* around NUMB = dead. I’m not sure why a platinum blonde is “not entirely fair”, though!

44 CHEMISE – HEM IS in CE = church (of England)
45 THITHER – T = craft’s “stern” + HIT + HER (referring to a boat)
46 WARLIKE – R + L (opposing sides, right and left) + I in WAKE
47 SEA ANEMONE – (one man a)* in SEE
49 CRITIQUED – it (reversed) + QU in CRIED
53 WALLABIES – AB = sailor in WALLIES. I loved this clue!
54 TABARET – BARE in TAT. TABARET is a type of fabric sometimes used for upholstery
55 DUVET – V = against in DUET
56 PARTY ANIMAL – green indicates the Green Party
57 WAR ON TERROR – WANT around OR (other ranks) reversed, + ERROR

2 RICHMOND UPON THAMES – (monarch impounds the)*
3 ISLAM – IS + LAM
4 HYPHENATION – HYPE = publicity around H, + NATION. “Dashing through manuscripts” is a nice oblique way of referring to hyphens (dashes)
5 APOSTASY – A + POST + AS + Y
6 HALF SEAS OVER – (solve afresh a)*
7 MUMBO JUMBO – MUM + job (reversed), + UMBO = boss
8 REMIT – timer (reversed)
9 MINUTE STEAK – MINUTE = little, + STEAK which sounds like stake = pale in the sense of fence material
10 WATER FLEA – sounds like “war to flee” (maybe, depending on your pronunciation!)

12 SIDE – a rather weak double definition

  1. 51 minutes, about as quick as I ever get on a Jumbo. Thank you for explaining 10d and 38d. As someone suffering from TR (terminal rhoticism), I would never have worked out 10d.COD to 55ac.
  2. 34:10 for me. I made the mistake of tackling this when I was already feeling tired, and felt exhausted by the end of it. But that’s by no means a complaint about an excellent puzzle with some wonderfully inventive clues.

    I don’t know why PLATINUM BLONDE should be “not entirely fair” either.

    I suspect I occasionally use the term HALF SEAS OVER, but I suppose I’m a bit archaic myself nowadays. (Sigh!)
