Solving time: 1:36:10
I went through most of this quite quickly by my own standards, although I slowed down a little towards the end. There were a number of good clues here. 20a stands out as being particularly clever, but 43d is also worth a mention.
cd = cryptic def., dd = double def., rev = reversal, homophones are written in quotes, anagrams as (–)*, and removals like this
1 | STEREOTYPED = (DOPEY SETTER)* |
7 | TICKET + PUNCH |
13 | M(OT)ET |
14 | B(ALL)OON – As a comic strip character, Charlie Brown communicates with speech balloons. |
15 | R(E + A + SON)ING |
16 | RURAL + DE(A)N |
17 | A + PI + CULT + U + RE |
20 | AINTREE – A ‘wordplay in solution’ type clue. A in FIR (tree) gives FAIR, hence ‘what could be seen as making fair’. Clever and my COD. |
22 | CO + LOSS + I |
24 | COM(P)E + ER – Not a word I knew but clear enough from the wordplay |
25 | DI(ALTO + N)E – I wasn’t aware this was particularly an Americanism, but I guess we call it a dialling tone |
26 | IN LOCO PARENTIS = (ORAL INSPECTION)* |
28 |
|
29 | SHAM + ED |
30 | PREDESTINE = PALESTINE with the ALE replaced by REDE |
33 | T(HE + TEMP)EST |
35 | PEPPER – dd – The Sergeant with the Lonely Hearts Club Band, of course |
37 | YAHOO – dd |
39 | ONE-ARMED BANDIT = (NEED MINT ABROAD)* – For making money for the owners of the machine, that is, not the mugs who use them. |
41 | C(A)LAM + ARI |
44 | SURF ACE |
45 | ENCODER = E |
46 | S(P)EED + UP |
47 | RIB + |
49 | ST(RING)ENT |
53 | DOONE’S + BIT |
54 | T + REASON |
55 | NITRE – rev hidden |
56 | MINE’S + WEE + PER |
57 | T(RAVE + LAG)ENT |
Down | |
---|---|
1 | S(A + MARK)AND |
2 | EAT DRINK AND BE MERRY = (DINER + BEER TANKARD MY)* |
3 |
|
4 | TABLE TENNIS = (ISN’T TENABLE)* |
5 | (Marco) POLO + NECK |
6 | DROP + A + CLAN + G + ER |
7 | TENNIS SHOE = (SIN + NET HOSE)* |
8 | CORFU = FROC |
9 | ELASTIC + BAND |
10 | PROGRAMME = GRAM in PROM + |
11 | NAIL = LIAN |
12 | HUG + E |
18 | LEFT RIGHT AND CENTRE = L + (CAN FIGHT DETERRENT)* |
19 | PRO(S)PER + O |
21 | RETINUE = UNITE rev in R |
23 | IS + OT + ROPY |
27 | PAS |
28 | OUT + HOUSE |
31 | SPY (plant) + WARE (pots, etc) |
32 | BE WILDER + MEN + T – I’m not entirely sure where the final T comes from here. I guess it’s an abbreviation of ‘the’ in a Yorkshire kind of way, as in ‘There’s trouble at t’mill’, but it may be from the ‘Time’ at the start somehow, although I don’t see an instruction that puts it at the end. |
34 | PR (Public relations) + EVEN (evening of poetry, i.e. in a poetic way) + TABLE (food) |
36 | REASSURANCE = (A NURSE CARES)* |
38 | INOCULATOR = (C + OUT IN ORAL)* |
40 | RE + A + DINES + S |
42 | I’M PATIENT |
43 | IRISH SEA = (HE IS A SIR)* – I liked the misleading definition here, regarding the Isle of Man |
48 | CUT UP = PUT (station) rev after CU (copper) |
50 | NINJA – hidden |
51 | EDAM = MAD + E all rev |
52 | WORN = ROW rev + |
