Times Cryptic Jumbo No 1425 – 15th February. Around (about) now

Hello all.  How do you eat a jumbo?  One bite at a time.  Once again I solved this in bitesize chunks and so don’t have a time.  From what I recall it slipped down ok without the need for excessive chewing, with just a couple of crunchier bits to finish.

I don’t generally worry too much about repeated indicators, especially simple ones, and especially in a jumbo.  Still, I couldn’t help noticing that before very long I’d written “around (about)” a fair few times.  Anyway, having done the Hokey Cokey, I will now say thank you to the setter – thank you setter! – and move on to the clues.  That’s what it’s all about!

Definitions are underlined in the clues below.  In the explanations, quoted indicators are in italics, [deletions] in square brackets, and I’ve capitalised and emboldened letters which appear in the ANSWER.

  1. I rather enjoyed this one.. fun, but not too much of a slog. No unknowns, although where i knew luthier from I’m not quite sure. Another crossword most likely.
  2. A Jumbo with no DNKs, something of a rarity for me. I had a couple of ?s, though: 14ac recurrent to indicate reversal? Bolsheviks as anarchists?
    1. I agree, the Bolsheviks were not anarchists, the precise opposite in their organisation, planning, actions and objectives!

      Phil

  3. Quite straightforward and my only queries were to do with definitions not previously known: FORENSIC as ‘relating to courts’, STARBOARD as a verb meaning turn to starboard and ‘fret’ as a verb meaning to press a string against a fret, although I knew LUTHIER itself.

    1. I think the required meaning is what the instrument-maker does, i.e. “vt to provide with frets” in making lutes or guitars.
  4. Just over 40 minutes, so at the easier end of the scale for me. Like Kevin, I think I had no unknowns, which is unknown for me for a Jumbo. Sadly, I had 1 pink square with RIGHTY at 9A for my LOI… and a questionmark beside the clue. No wonder I couldn’t parse it! MER at 23D as Germanium is a metalloid or semimetal, not a metal. COD to SEPTET. Thanks Kitty and setter.
    1. To astronomers, EVERYTHING except hydrogen and helium is a metal. I think…
      1. Oh yes. I had forgotten that. But I still don’t think 23D is a stellar clue.

  6. Dammit. I *thought* the five series of “Luthier” I’ve watched seemed a lot less exciting than the Idris Elba supernatural thriller everyone else seemed to be talking about…
