Saturday Times 25257 (1st Sept)

Solving time 19:58 (one of my faster solves of the week too, as I solved this on the Tuesday or Wednesday, and most of the rest were pretty tough). I was off sick with a nasty summer cold all this week, although luckily I can work from home in my current job so it wasn’t too bad. Took a long time to get 8ac (considering that I live there), but then when I saw it I stuck it in without re-reading the clue and got the tense wrong! Posting early as I’m off to Anax’s 50th birthday party in Altrincham tomorrow morning. Anyone else from here going?

Across
1 RANGE – ANGER (needle) with the last letter put to the front.
4 DIATRIBE – RIB (kid) inside D.I. (inspector) + ATE (put away).

  1. The only problem I had with this puzzle was spelling ADVOCAAT, which I agree is a nauseating concoction that I associate with the early 1960s. (Snowballs anyone?)

It has, however, recently become fashionable again. Last Christmas, my son and his mates invaded the kitchen with carrier bags of ingredients, and proceeded to brew up bowls full of the stuff, which they called “egg nog”.

  2. 45′, one of my faster Saturdays, but I made the same mistake as linxit on 8ac. Nice to know I’m in good company, at least. LOI 24ac. 13d and 15d from checkers, figured them out afterwards. I never did figure out MARTYRDOM, because I decided that ‘short time’=YR, which left me with MOD (or DOM; either way the clue doesn’t work, of course). I had doubts about NEEDLE=anger (I think there’s been something similar recently), since needling indicates intent, not result.
Anax has given me, inter alia, so many presents that I feel I ought to show up and give him something. But I trust he realizes that there are heaps of us out there wishing him a happy birthday.
  3. My main problem with this one was getting started. 11 minutes to the first one in at 8ac. After that I made steady progress and completed the grid in 44 minutes without aids.
  4. 27:34 .. and I can’t remember a thing about it. But that’s my fault, not the puzzle’s.

Give my regards to Anax… Actually, no. Find a way to inflict mental torture on him for half an hour or so, THEN buy him a pint!

  5. 32 minutes this morning, from my usual printout. I would have saved a bit of time if I had remembered where the C comes in RESUSCITATE. (I struggled at 10a with an unlikely anagram beginning with U) I take it that the birthday boy you all mention is the “Dean Mayer” who frustrates me on the occasional Sunday. It’s terrible for one so young to have such a fiendishly twisted mind. What will he be like in embittered old age? Please pass on birthday wishes from another of his victims. Ann
