Plenty of double definitions and well signposted charades here, alongside one or two chewier clues. I did not know the archaic term, and got held up for too long on 14dn.

  1. COD 5D. COYS

Other than that I found this quite tough but I’m not sure why. LOI 14D.

  2. Thought this was going to be tough after first run through. Then got all the long answers and it flowed quite smoothly.

Last in RESIGN with joint favourites, INCESSANT and FINANCE.

  3. I got the long ones like 9ac and 19ac quickly enough, but several clues like 14d were recalcitrant. Never heard of WHITE HART LANE, which didn’t help matters. 10′.
  4. All but one clue solved in 10 minutes but had a mental block at 8dn where I couldn’t see past STARK for ‘hard’ which clearly didn’t fit with ‘back’. Technical DNF as I looked it up eventually.
  5. Well, I found this pretty hard. Fashion is not ‘my thing’, I’ve never called a goalkeeper a saver or had waffles for breakfast either but then maybe I’m missing out on something good! Apart from that I enjoyed it – especially trying to fit Ishmael (remembered from another QC some time ago) into 11ac and then realising it was a wider definition.
  6. Plenty of anagrams kept me going steadily – just a little over average solving time for me. MONKEY GRINDER popped into my head first for 9a. Fortunately, I didn’t put it in. 8d and 15d were my last two – words with less than half the letters are checkers can be harder to see. 14d is my favourite.
  7. Thought this was quite tricky and it was a slow solve, but got there in the end. Missed the anagram in 19a but RW is the only German composer I know so I chucked it in with a couple of checkers. Also didn’t parse 14d or 20d. Overall a good challenge.
  8. I didn’t think I was going to finish this.
After quite a long time I lacked a lot of answers including the long 3d-I couldn’t see what the answer might be. But having got Estate the rest became clear and my LOI was 20d Rut(I wasn’t able to parse it) which I only got after getting Defect (last but one).
A very good puzzle I thought. David
