Mephisto 3041 – Tim Moorey

I seem to recall getting through this pretty easily last Sunday with a few head-scratching moments which I hope I can work out over the next few minutes, though there is one that completely eludes me.

Most definitions can be confirmed via Chambers, so I’m mostly going to try to unravel the wordplay. It’s an intriguing grid this week, lots of long down answers breaking up the quadrants.

The first definition is underlined.

  1. For what it’s worth, 1-agora and 5-agorot coins have been abolished, as costing more than their value to produce, and prices are rounded to the nearest multiple of 10 agorot.
  2. Hi George, so far as I can see 5dn is an anagram of (P)ORT + GO + A where A = acre, and GO = given out. The mechanism for removing the P might be “tiny coins given out” and the def. is not as underlined but the whole clue, ie an &lit. This sort of works, but things overlap rather! I’m open to better suggestions..
  3. Similar experience to George with a ? beside 5D. I came to similar conclusion as Jerry, thinking the whole clue a bit of a stretch in an effort to produce an &lit. Luckily answer couldn’t be anything else
  4. I took it as a double definition
tiny coins given out in change?
    What’s ready in Acre port

An agora is an Israeli unit of currency equal to 1/100 of the shekel. Its plural = AGOROT and Acre is a city and port in northern Israel on the Bay of Haifa.
