  1. I was equally baffled. The key to enlightenment is an abbrev only shown in Chambers at the abbreviated word – infimum.
    1. Thanks Peter

So, its INF-O where INF=infimum=the greatest lower bound and O=of

Interesting because years ago Chambers had a lot of words that only appeared in the entry for other words and one used to go hunt for them. Clearly now out of practice because of changes (for the better) in the dictionary. I suspect that 20 years ago I would have eventually found that entry!

      1. Yes, they have improved most of these. The worst I remember was emalangeni, once only findable under lilangeli.
  2. Thanks Jim, found that hard, defeated by 11d and 26ac. I guess hyphenated words such as gag-rein can be classed as one word in mephisto?
  3. I also had a ? under INFO but reading the explanation above I’m kicking myself, you’ll find it a lot in older calculus texts and I must have seen it a hundred times in high school
    1. My only excuse is that highschool was over 50 years ago for me but I still kicked myself when I realised that I could and should have solved it because like you I must have seen it many times before
  4. Yes Allan. If the clue says (7,2 words) it means two complete separate words and not a hyphenated word whereas what would be (3-4) in daily puzzles is shown in bar crosswords as (7).
