Jumbo 1293

This was mostly straightforward, but I am afraid I have a big issue with 2D where I cannot separate two possible solutions. One is slightly favoured by the wordplay, the other favoured by the final solution. I would not be surprised if there was some debate over this. Anyway, here is my take.

Across
1 SEEDINESS – SEES around DINES = eats
6 DISPARAGEMENT – DENT = crater, around IS, PARA = soldier and GEM = brilliant
13 REBEL – REEL = rock and roll, around B(ishop)
14 AMORPHOUS – AMOROUS = passionate, around P.H. = pub
15 OCCLUDE – initial letters of Our and Crosswords, CLUED*
16 THROW CAUTION TO THE WINDS – (SANCTION THE WORD WITHOUT)*
18 GRAVELLY – G(ood), RAVEL = composer, (on)LY
20 COVERAGE – COVE = fellow, RAGE = anger
21 GUSTO – hidden in (aspara)GUS TO(matoes)
23 CHIN UP – (I PUNCH)*
24 LEMURS – MUR = RUM = very odd, reversed in LES(ser)

47 LANDLADY – LAND = get hold of, LADY = woman
49 PARLIAMENTARY PRIVILEGE – (REVERING MILITARY APPEAL)*

Down
1 STRATEGIC – GET = receive, ARTS, all reversed, I.C. = in charge
2 EMBARKATION (or EMBARCATION?) – (d)EMARKATION (or (d)EMARCATION)= cause of union disputes, around B(ritish). I cannot find a definitive entry in Chambers for either so believe that both should be accepted. Typing this before the soultion is available I cannot confirm which the setter intended. For a prize puzzle I don’t believe this is acceptable
3 IN-LAW – IN = home, LAW = rule
4 ERASABLE – ERA = time, SABLE = black

  1. I don’t know what the dictionaries say, but I would say that ‘demarcation’ definitely takes a C and ’embarkation’ takes a K; but I wrote EMBARCATION based on the wordplay, and it’s right as far as the people who mark these things go. DNK 5d, but it seemed pretty clearcut. Also DNK 39ac. I had DIPLODOCUS from the checkers long before I parsed it. I never heard of HOME as a transitive verb. The setter cuts (initial and) final letters 3 times (40ac: ‘uncovering sparkling wine’, 52ac: ‘suffering final cuts’, 51d: ‘cases removed’), which I don’t think I’ve seen before in one puzzle; not that I mind, mind you. LOI 22d.
  2. Agree with Kevin, DEMARCATION with a C and EMBARKATION with a K; never seen TO EMBARC as the verb. And I don’t think DEMARC is a word.
Disagree with Kevin, HOME can be a verb, as in HOMING PIGEON a pigeon which homes.
Bones of an hour but no hassles.
    1. Yes, but a homing pigeon doesn’t home something, it homes; i.e. ‘home’ here is intransitive. ‘accommodate’ is transitive, but I can’t think of a transitive use of ‘home’.
  3. I agree that 2d is a misleading clue, so I followed the wordplay and it was marked correct. I don’t think it’s accurate though. However I still failed with one wrong. A very careless GALTIUM at 44d. Must have been weary as it was around my LOI. 71:03. Didn’t know WING TIP as a shoe. Thanks setter and sgh.
  4. Went for the ‘k’ in that word, having checked in my Oxford.Remember Lord Snooty in the beano in the 70’s.He was a genial guy despite snooty meaning ‘snobbish’,l lie?
    Ong’ara,
    Kenya.
  5. Wow – I didn’t even consider the K in EMBARKATION (a word used with that spelling far too often in the US). My Chambers and Collins have both EMBARCATION, EMBARKATION, DEMARKATION and DEMARCATION! Yikes.
  6. I too assumed DEMARCATION could only take a C and that EMBARCATION was at least possible. But yes, with hindsight it does feel like a rather slapdash clue…
