Jumbo 1202 April 16, 2016 – Something for everyone?

Just under the hour for me, so medium difficulty I would suggest.  A couple of leaps of faith with EUPHORBIA and MICRODOT, but nothing too controversial as I recall.  Unless you want to get into a debate about whether Neanderthals were people, which I don’t.

Compliments to the setter as usual.  I particularly liked the clues for INTROITS and METAL.  Some lovely surfaces as well, involving naughty girls, furious feminists and badly behaved nurses.  Come to think of it there’s also a beautiful woman (or two), a wife on a mattress, a mother-to-be, an Iron Maiden and an incredibly fit fighting nun, so it would seem that all tastes are catered for.

Anyway, down to business.  Clues are in blue, with definitions underlined.  Anagrinds are bolded and italicised.

  1. Some great surfaces in this, especially the ludicrousness of 28D (the deceptive definition being a bonus) – a John Halpern production, I would guess. Didn’t know FRIEDAN or that meaning of MICRODOT, and LUCRETIUS went in from the wordplay rather than any knowledge that he was a poet.

Enjoyed the blog, but that cat comment …

    1. Well maybe it’s just the Cornish Rex that rules our household, and with whom I’m forced to share a bed every night, on her terms.
  2. Yes, Joan Rivers is no longer with us, else she would have been tabloo; but I was surprised that she showed up here. A batch of lovely clues, as Mohn and our eminent blogger both note. I was pleased that I was able to remember ‘strop’ and ‘ratty’ from earlier cryptics. COD maybe to 25ac for its misleadingness. Galspray, if Wuthering H is the worst novel you’ve ever read, consider yourself lucky; there’s a shedload of worse waiting for you at your neighborhood public library. You might try Aldous Huxley’s “Island”; I’ve never tried, but it had the reputation for being the worst novel ever written in English.
    1. In fairness to Ms Bronte, when I wrote that comment I’d forgotten that I’ve read The Da Vinci Code.
      1. Well, you’re clearly made of sterner stuff than I; I finished Ch. 1. The author, you know, was an English teacher at a prep school.
      2. Right on – the Da Vinci Code is even worse than Moby-Dick…

I just Googled Cornish Rex and it looks a like a mutant.

  3. I was going to say how much I enjoyed this crossword, especially the superb hidden clue at 17ac and the high quality surfaces generally; but I wouldn’t want to be seen discussing things with a cat-hater..
  4. Are you serious Galspray that Dan Browne’s is poor? Found it gripping from start to finish. Really enjoyed this jumbo, especially the risqué ones, remind me of a certain Telegraph setter. 7d he he, my COD,21d also excellent. (Ong’ara, Nairobi, Kenya )
