    1. The definition is in Chambers. I associate it with the North of the UK (Liverpool/Scouse in particular), but I am not sure of the origin.

  1. Tks for blog. In 19A I think Land of Hope refers to Anthony Hope who created the fictional country Ruritania in his writing.
  2. I was one of many wondering about 46d. Also DNK 35d, but being pretty sure of the ROVERS part, … Anonymous has it right on Ruritania. I remember this, not from having read Hope, but from having read the introduction to a collection of Times cryptics years and years ago, where as an example, ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ was the clue for RURITANIA. That, I remember; I’m still having trouble with my mobile number.
