Championship setters named

I hoped to post a message this before going on holiday, but it took the Crossword Club elves a bit longer than I expected. This message from Richard Browne (Times xwd ed) appeared on the bulletin page while I was away.

The Cheltenham championship puzzles were widely praised by the competitors, and the identity of their compilers seems to have leaked out into the public domain to some extent. So, to give the setters their due, and to satisfy any lingering curiosity, we will for once break with tradition and name them. (This does not mean that we are going to change the general policy of anonymity – the daily sequence of puzzles will remain unattributed, as always.) The authors of the puzzles were as follows:

Preliminary A: 1, Roger Phillips; 2, John Grimshaw; 3, Don Manley
Preliminary B: 1, Dave Crossland; 2, Bob Hesketh; 3, John Halpern
Grand Final: 1, Colin Gumbrell; 2, Richard Rogan; 3, Dean Mayer

  1. I certainly enjoyed all the puzzles and nice to see a name check for the compilers as a one-off. As an aside, some of those mentioned above as well as some of us solvers would have recognised one of the restuarants featured on Gordon Ramsay’s F-Word last night. A ‘cook-off’ between two of the best Indian restuarants selected from all over the UK featured the “Curry Corner” of Cheltenham, the now traditional pre and post Championship eating establishment for those stopping over. (It came second by the way)
  2. I was wondering did the full results get published somewhere? Didn’t the organiser send copies out in previous years? It’s just nice to be able say (ironically) i am 77th or so in the world at something although of course it doesn’t quite work as the two prelims don’t correlate straightforwardly. As it stands i know i am in the top 250 but not in the top 25; doesn’t have quite the same ring.
    1. The results appeared on the Times website (though as a Word document rather than PDF or web page) very promptly – the next day I think. It’s linked in our championship report.
