Unofficial Times cryptic RTC No. 8 – results

A surprisingly low entry for this week, considering that everyone who was all-correct had their quickest time for six puzzles since we started. Maybe MONTAGU’S HARRIER on Tuesday had more victims than we know about from comments on the report.

I suspect we’ll have to wait a very long time for anyone to beat Mark Goodliffe’s 30:54 this week, but his relatively slow time for Friday’s puzzle suggests that it’s just possible.

Other records set this week:

  • I’m pretty sure Monday’s puzzle was the first for which we’ve had three people under 5 minutes.
  • A total of six sub-5 times in the week, from four different solvers, must also be a first.
  • Three people under the hour for correct solutions for the week.
  • 2:55 by Mark for one puzzle will probably be the record in this contest for a few years.

Needless to day, Mark wins both competitions easily, but yours truly and Hilary Seidman also posted pretty quick times, and linxit shattered his personal target of 90 minutes. No star or spoon this week – about 6 people could be given the star, and the harrier mistake was made by too many to count as carelessness.

Back to normality next week I think – I’ve already got 21:50 on the scoreboard for yesterday’s puzzle.

  1. As Peter knows already, for the sake of getting my times in on time I quoted them from memory. It seems I am regularly generous to myself, as my real recorded times exceeded those I sent by the following numbers of seconds: 3, 0, 1, -2, 0, 7, meaning that my overall time was 30:54 not 30:45 – as this is the record mark so far I thought I ought to correct.

Like Peter I have now taken over half of last week’s total time to achieve Saturday’s puzzle: 16.00 in my case.
