Times Saturday 24526 (May 1st)

Posted on Categories Weekend Cryptic
Solving time 18:28, plus about 5 minutes. I started looking at it last Saturday, but had only entered about half a dozen answers in the first 5 minutes when I had to leave it. I didn’t get another chance until Monday morning then. Pretty tough, without the wow factor of the previous week, although there were some great clues. Unfortunately I’m short of time this morning, so this will have to be brief.

Across
1 DELINEATE – DELI + NEAT + E
6 SIFTS – S(h)IFTS
9 GLOWING – WING (section) next to GO (work) around L
10 THEOREM – H.E. (explosive) inside TORE + M(illions)
11 EXUDE – X inside (f)EUD + (volatil)E
13 NOURISHED – (ES in H round)*, ES being a quarter of “injuries”, and with N removed, “and lost” giving the instruction, as in fish ‘n’ chips. Hopefully someone’s got a better explanation!
14 SCINTILLA – C(ousin) + IN inside STILL A(rea).
16 FRAY – double definition.
18 DIET – alternate letters of “aDvIcE aT”
19 GREENHORN – G(ood) + (here on)* + R.N.
22 BILATERAL – ATE R.A. inside BILL
24 OCEAN – O(ver) + C(l)EAN
25 CULVERT – REV reversed inside CULT
26 COMICAL – CO + (claim)*
28 EARLY – A (top mark) inside (Rely)*
29 MOMENTOUS – SUM reversed around OMEN TO

Down
1 DIGRESS – DIG + RE + S,S (saints)
2 LEO – E(nglish) + 0 underneath L (pound)
3 NOISETTE – NO I SEE around TT (dry). A small piece of meat (usually lamb) cut off the bone and rolled.
4 ARGON – R inside AGO + N
5 ENTOURAGE – (tone argue)*
6 SEE FIT – FEES reversed + IT
7 FURTHERMORE – FURORE around THERM
8 SOMEDAY – DOME with the D moved down, inside SAY
12 UNICELLULAR – (comm)U(nity) + NICE + LULL reversed + A R(iver)
15 LOGARITHM – LOG + ARI(a) + T(ime) + H.M.
17 UNCOMMON – (s)UMMON around NCO
18 DEBACLE – DEB(t) + L inside ACE
20 NONPLUS – N(ote) + PL(ace) inside NOUS
21 STEELY – TEE inside SLY. In another puzzle I solved this week it was clued as EEL in STY.
23 LOCUM – LO (look) + C (around) + UM
27 COO – double definition

  1. I enjoyed this puzzle and thought it a bit harder than average but agree it was unlucky in that it suffered a little in comparison with the previous Saturday.

I agree with anon on NOURISHED

  2. U = 4th letter of ‘injuries,’ in ‘hard round’ = IRON backwards, plus ‘lost’ = SHED.
