Times Quick Crytic 1086 by Orpheus.

I was only vaguely familiar with the composer in 23ac and unfamiliar with the Catholic dignitary in 21dn but the clueing was simply – so – thanks to Orpheus for a quick QC – completed in a couple of seconds over 9 minutes. I liked quite a few of the surfaces (1ac, 20ac, 24ac and the well used but still amusing 14dn) but my favourite and COD is 2dn. Loi 20ac

9. HYACINTH – liliaceous plant. Anagram (manoeuvring) of IN YACHT next to (by) hotel (H).
11. ACT – section of play. Bill (AC – account), cas(T).
13. DYEING – colouring clothes. Homophone (we hear) of dying (longing).
16. MAYHEM – chaos. Month (MAY) preceding border (HEM).
18. ERR – slip. Queen (ER), (R)epublican.
19. TALENTED – clever. Chap (LEN) entering gallery (TATE) with daughter (D).
20. COWARDLY – faint hearted. Fellow protege (CO-WARD), (L)ow ke(Y).
22. THUS – in this way. Part of Sabba(TH US)ed.
23. BYRD – English composer (William. 1543–1623, English composer and organist, noted for his madrigals, masses, and music for virginals). Year (YR) inside (B)radforD).
24. MINISTRY – government department. Test on small cars – MINIS TRY (edited – see comment from jackkt).

1. GALAHAD – Arthurian knight. Festival (GALA), deceived (HAD).
2. ANTEATER – it takes in (eats) the workers (worker ants). Article (A) on top of an anagram (new) of TEEN ART.
3. FORTNIGHT – some days. Homophone (reportedly) of fought (battled with) and knight (1dn).
4. LAM – thrash. Young farm animal endlessly (LAM)b.
5. RUNAWAY – fugitive. (A)rrested in part of airport (RUNWAY).
6. PRELATE – church dignitary. Pair (PR), dined (ATE) with ‘the’ in Spanish (EL).
10. HIMALAYAN – mountain-dweller. Greeting (HI), native of Kula Lumpur (MALAYAN).
12. CHITCHAT – gossip. About (C), to strike (HIT), tabby (CAT) outside hospital (H).
14. YELLOWY – a little jaundiced. Cry out in pain (YELL OW), sa(Y).
15. IRELAND – part of British Isles. Anger (IRE), youth (LAD) about northern (N).
17. MODESTY – lack of pretentiousness. Way (MODE), animal enclosure (STY).
21. DOM – title of Catholic dignitary. Sixties youth came up recently as mod – upset (DOM).

  1. A gentle one today; I even got the non-rhotic homophone at 3d without a pause. I did take a moment to get DOM, thinking of Ted first instead of Mod (Chris; think Dom Pérignon). BYRD is definitely worth getting more familiar with. 3:51.

    Paused on Lett to make sure there were no alternatives. Dnk Byrd.

    Last 2 were prelate and reminder.
    I struggled with prelate because I initially forgot pr = pair and the “with” suggested EL went at the end.

    For Reminder, I spent a while trying to force runner in somewhere, and got it eventually unparsed, forgetting the render/tear link.

    1. I had the same issue at 6dn – there was no clear indicator that ‘with’ meant in the middle rather than at the end but I suppose that’s fair enough given the checking letters available.
  3. 9 minutes for this one which marks Orpheus’s 100th appearance as our setter, so congratulations and thanks to him. These milestones are coming think and fast at the moment!

    Chris, sorry to be picky but 24ac is MINIS (small cars), TRY (test); there’s a greengrocer’s apostrophe inadvertently found its way in.

    1. At the time I read it as a mini’s try (a test for a mini) but not sure why now you’ve pointed it out. The ‘on’ is simply there to put ‘try’ after ‘minis’.

  5. A very enjoyable solve today in 13:02. Like others struggled with 6dn PRELATE which was my LOI. Plenty of smiles particularly with 3dn and 10dn ‘homophones’.
  6. A very Mondayish feel to this after a number of tricky offerings in recent weeks. I was surprised to see a grid that provided two entire solutions from checkers alone, without any need to even read the clue, let alone biff the answers.

  7. Didn’t know LETT meant Latvian – definitely a new one on me that I need to remember. Otherwise, I had a good run today. Liked TALENTED and COWARDLY. Thanks Orpheus and esteemed blogger for helping me out with that pesky 7A!

  8. About 15 minutes for this enjoyable puzzle. LOI was Lett as I did not know this word and guessed it from the clue.
    Otherwise liked 2d and 10d -and 3d. Thanks Orpheus for today and the century. David
  9. I understand LETT as a Latvian, and allow=let, but could someone explain the radio part? Thx. Pretty straightforward otherwise. FOI 1a. LOI 20a. COD 10d.
    1. I think ‘to be broadcast on radio’ is the homophone indicator – it’s lengthier than usual but seems to do the job. Broadcast on the radio means it will be heard by a radio listener.
  10. Took an age to see the anagram at 2d, and eventually had to write it out on paper, but my 9:37 was all in vain as I yet again got the I and Y mixed up in the plant at 9a. Bah! Thanks Orpheus(and congrats on the century) and Chris.

Like others, Lett and Byrd were both unknowns, but even so I thought this was a pleasant 30 mins solve. 12d was my CoD for a long time, but it eventually came second to 8ac – I spent ages trying to get a word connected with running before I twigged what was going on. Congratulations to Orpheus on his century. Invariant

    FOI 1a L2I 2d and 8a. So easy once the penny drops! Thanks Orpheus for making your hundredth so enjoyable. I am struggling to find a favourite as there are so many excellent surfaces….. perhaps I’ll go for 24a and can I nominate 3d too. Thanks, Chris, for the blog. MM
  13. I made steady progress today before being held up by 24a and LOI 21d, where I couldn’t get past ‘ted’ – I’d forgotten about mods. Finally saw what was going on with 24 and completed in a sluggish 21.02.
    An enjoyable puzzle nonetheless.
  14. … that I missed an appointment I had on Tuesday because, well, it’s Monday isn’t it?

    Anyway, Monday or not, an enjoyably do-able puzzle (though not easy enough for me to be inside 3 Kevins). “Liliaceous” is a fantastic word.

  15. Sorry still don’t follow how you get lett from broadcast on radio. Apart from that a fair qc offering
    1. It’s ‘allowed’ = let – sounds like LETT which is a Latvian. Broadcast on radio is the ‘sounds like’.
      1. Thanks for your reply but I’m afraid I’m a lost cause. I still can’t follow that broadcast on radio makes let into lett. I am a novice so it’s probably some convention that I’m unaware of. In the world I inhabit a homophone is say rough is like ruff. Again thanks for your help
        1. It’s the same World – it’s just that this homophone is even more obvious than rough = ruff, LETT does sound like let = allowed. So, on a radio broadcast, if someone said a Latvian is a LETT one may hear it as ‘let’.
