Times Quick Cryptic No 1858 by Teazel

Quite an inventive puzzle today from Teazel. Of similar difficulty to yesterday’s, I found, coming in close to 8 minutes for both. It took me a while to get going, failing on the first four acrosses, and then had a bit of a delay at the end with the large animal bit of 9ac and the unknown game at 5d. Most enjoyable – many thanks to Teazel!

  1. ….that “stagant” wasn’t a tape (or, indeed, anything else !) I worked my way through this without dramas.

    FOI SCORN
    LOI HATE
COD JUST THINK OF IT *
    TIME 4:32

    * Not so much that it “shouldn’t happen” but more that one wishes it would, for example “JUST THINK OF IT, a fortnight in the Seychelles !”

  2. Only Sealant and Whacko were problems today. I always forget W in front of H, trying to make C and S work.
I remember 3 card brag from my youth. It’s quicker than poker. I seem to recall a very enjoyable game of strip brag.
Can you still say things like that? Doubt many wokes do the QC. Johnny
    1. I think you’re safe with that comment, here, Johnny. Not like The Times’ moderator(s)!
  3. Spent a while wondering where I had lost the M in skincream but otherwise plain sailing
  4. If I’d started on the downs instead of the acrosses, this could have been completed a lot faster. As it was, I took quite a while to get to the downs and I’d only got three by the time I did (FOI was PERU and the other two were HATE and OWL). Once I got to the downs, things started going in and it was a steady solve after that, only getting held up by being interrupted by some pet rats wanting to come out to play (this requires the hiding or removal of wires) and my LOI SEALANT (I almost went for that well known type of tape “Stagant”, but I see I was in good company there). Anyway, all done in 32:13, so it would have been within target without the interruption. COD and WOD to CALAMITY. Thanks Teazel and Roly.
  5. 23 minutes but completed.
    Natural second meaning difficult.
On the more tricky scale me thinks.
    Thanks all
    John George
  6. What a great puzzle – good variety of clever clues. Seemed to take a while to get started and then we really speeded up only to be slowed down by 14D. We enjoyed it and finished in 13 minutes.

    FOI: SCORN
    LOI: WHACKO
    COD: JUST THINK OF IT

    Thanks to Teazel and Rolytoly.
