Times Jumbo 811 (Sat 25 Apr 2009)

A very good puzzle, indeed. Tough, but very fair, with rigorous clueing. Solving time, 98 mins.

* = anagram < = reversed
ACROSS
1 G(RASP)ABLE Clark Gable of Gone With the Wind and much else
6 DEAD MEN’S SHOES (She’s Desdemona)* Clue divides very neatly at weird/substitute which starts a very precise definition.
13 TAC(H)O A short version of tachometer – the ‘spy in the cab’ (Thanks, Kurihan, comment 2 below, for explaining that the ‘spy in the cab’ is tachograph. The definition was ‘instrument for measuring’ which would I think be tachometer as above. Dicts confirm TACHO can be used for either.)

39 NAstY
40 WEST LOTHIAN QUESTION (How quintessential to)* Readers outside the UK might not be familiar with this. Coined in the debate on devolution for Scotland drawing attention to the fact that with a parliament in London for the whole UK and one in Scotland dealing with Scottish issues that the Scots could vote on matters relating to England but not the other way round.
42 MAN I TOU(r)

  1. Enjoyed this one very much – got the WEST – QUESTION and had to play with the middle letters and confirm LOTHIAN afterwards.
  2. A wee pedantic point. The “tachometer” is the rev-counter. The “tachograph” is the spy-in-the-cab.
  3. Has an explanation of 24,219 been posted? 16d (Island between river banks in French city [8]) has me stumped.
