Solving time: 34:47

Quite a straightforward puzzle, although the NW corner did not give up much to begin with, so a slow start, and the SE corner took a little work at the end.

I did not find many clues meriting discussion, so if I have missed something that needs explaining please feel free to post a question.

Across

14

GOOD GRIEF (GOOD + GRIEF) – the definition comes from the end of the previous clue “…expression of surprise…”.  Ellipses are often used to link together the surface meanings of two (or more) clues, but it’s unusual to have to refer to one for required information to solve the other.

15

OUIDA (ADIeU + O rev.) – I did not know Ouida so had to work this out from the wordplay.

16

SPUTNIK (ITS PUNK*) – “dish” was not in my anagram indicator repertoire, but it means “to ruin”, and also “to distribute (type)”.

22

BLENHEIM – (2 “defs.”) – “defs.” In quotes because Blenheim Orange is actually a variety of apple, so this is more of a hint.  The spaniel is listed in Chambers though.

26

BANJOIST (BAN + JOIST) – I love the way that some words can split like this!

27

ESCARP (PRACtiSE rev.) – I found this hard to spot – I was looking for something ending in EP (P.E. reversed).

37

ICEBOX (lifEBoat in I COX) – the surface conjures up a very bizarre image!

39

DEVOTEE (DE-VOTE + E) – I do like wordplay that “invents” things like this, “franchise” = de-vote.

46

DECRYPT (CRY in DEPT) – “small” in the clue indicating that we are looking for an abbreviation of Department.

51

OUTWORN (OU + TWO + RN)

54

MISADVENTURE (VET UNARMED IS*) – I had to get this from the definition because in the online version (as usual) the cross-reference to another clue was given as “twenty four” rather than “24”.

Down

7

THISTLEDOWN (LED in THIS TOWN) – “played first” = led, as in cards, but I was not convinced by “the aforementioned place” = THIS TOWN.

23

ASPIRATE (AS PIRATE) – Hook being Captain Hook.

31

ONE FOR THE ROAD (ONE + FORT + A in HEROD) – the definition was the giveaway – not easy to spot the wordplay.

33

WAITING ROOM (“WAY” + TIN + GROOM)

40

VICARIOUS (VI + CARIOUS) – the missile is the V-1 flying bomb.

43

ARBUTUS (TUB + RA rev. + US)

46

DABBLER (DAB + BLuER) –

47

GIBBET (GIB + BET) – the Rock of Gibraltar and  Jack Ketch’s place of work.

  1. Thanks for OUIDA which I did not get – it crossed THISTLEDOWN which took me ages to get and, like you, I thought ‘this town’ was unconvincing as ‘aforementioned place’.
