Times Jumbo 1349: At A Fair Clip

Easiest Jumbo *I’ve* done in a while, certainly, proving all done and dusted in 12 minutes. Most of the definition parts led to exactly what you I expected them to, and were quickly substantiated by a glance at the cryptic; the wordplay is fairly homogeneous, a lot removing the first or last letter from something, inserting something into or removing something from something else. No bad thing to have a training-wheels-style Jumbo of course!

First One In 1ac, Last One In 39ac after I mentally double checked that it was a CLIP and not a FLAP… no hardened cyclist, me. Clue of the Day definitely goes to cheeky/clever &lit 5dn. Thanks setter!

  1. I don’t remember what my time was, though I’m pretty sure it wasn’t 12 minutes. I do remember finishing this in one session, which is unusual for me, I usually leave it lying about and do a few clues here and there… so it must have been pretty easy.
Also liked 5dn, but there were quite a lot of neat clues, look at 40dn for example, v. clever. If I could clue like that I would die happy. Happier, anyway.
  2. I have no notes on this, aside from a couple of ‘COD’s in the margins, for 36ac, 56ac, and 12d, other than noting that 32d and 37ac took me forever to parse even though I was sure of the solutions. David saw BATHSHEBA bathing, wanted her, and being a king, got her. That makes her a temptress? A defense used by countless defense attorneys–“dressed like that, she obviously wanted it”–but still.
  3. I managed this one in 54:51 which is a lot quicker than my average 90 minutes or so. Definitely more straightforward than many, but still very enjoyable. Did’t know GAMELAN but the instructions were clear. Thanks setter and V.
  4. 12 mins Verlaine? Wow, that was fast, no wonder you were among the top in this year’s Times finals. As for me, FOI was AT-HEIST. COD NON COMPOS MENTIS which l first came across in a DT puzzle. LOI IOLANTHE.
