Times Jumbo 1274

Posted on Categories Jumbo Cryptic
Apologies for the slightly late posting of this – I was away from the computer all day yesterday. No really obscure words/phrases this time, and a straightforward solve, I thought.

As usual, * indicates an anagram.

Across
1 GATHER – double definition
4 SANCTIONED – another double definition
10 TWEET – WEE in TexT
14 SCAPEGOAT – GO AT after CAPE, after S
15 UNDERESTIMATE – cryptic indication
16 RALLIES – R + ALLIES
17 RETEACH – RET, + EACH (‘a head’)
18 REALIST – (Aristotle)*
19 POLITICALLY CORRECT – would be abbreviated as PC, as would Police Constable (‘cop’)
21 LAIC – hidden in soCIALism (reversed)
24 BIZET – BIZ, + ET (indicated by ‘and how he put it’ – ET is the French word for ‘and’)
26 AGONISED – (diagnose)*
27 ADHESION – A DON, around HE + is (reversed)
29 TYRANNICIDE – (incendiary)* after T
30 NONCHALANCE – NO N CHANCE, around LA
32 ARRAIGNMENT – sounds like ‘a reign meant’
35 CHAIRPERSON – CHAR around I, + PERSON. The ’19’ refers to 19ac, POLITICALLY CORRECT, but to me it doesn’t seem to be in the right place in the clue, since it applies to the definition (‘individual running meeting’)
37 FLAWLESS – F + LAWLESS
39 MAIN LINE – MAINE, around nil (reversed)
40 TENTH – TENT + H. I’d have gone for ‘after ninth’ (or ‘after 9th’) as the definition
43 LAPP – LAP + P
44 PEDESTRIAN CROSSING – (Presidents go in cars)*
47 COASTAL – COSTAL around A
48 TSARINA – (train as)*
50 DEBRIEF – BRIE in DEF
51 UNSENTIMENTAL – UNSENT + MENTAL, around I
52 SENIORITY – (is one I try)*
53 HOLLY – L in HOLY
54 DESTROYING – TROY, in DESIGN with the G and N swapped round
55 PLAYER – LAYER after P

Down
1 GASTROPUB – GAB, around u ports (reversed)
2 TRAILBLAZER – TRAIL BLAZER
3 ELEGIST – EG in E-LIST
5 ASTIR – it’s a, reversed, + R
6 COUNTRYSIDE – (city does run)*
7 INDIAN OCEAN – INDIAN + (canoe)*
8 NORTHERN – NOR + THE + otheR + directioN
9 DISGRACED – DIS + G + RACED
10 TRIBAL – B in TRIAL
11 EGALITARIAN – EG + ALIT + ARIAN
12 THEFT – THE FT. The Financial Times is printed on pink rather than white paper
13 CONSECRATION – CON, + RA in SECTION
20 LIONISED – IS in ONE, in LID
22 CONDEMN – DEM(ocrat) in CONN(ecticut)
23 HELL-BENT – HE’LL + BENT (‘grass’). Refers to the proverb ‘the road to Hell is paved with good intentions’
25 TANGIBLE – IB(idem) in TANGLE
28 INVASION – letters of SO appearing separately in IN VAIN
29 TEARFUL – Term + EARFUL
31 HORSE-TRADING – H + (denigrators)*
33 REAPPRAISAL – RE, + APPAL around (RA + IS)
34 TOASTMASTER – TO A + (smart set)*
35 CONVIVIALLY – CON + VI + VI + ALLY. The Latin for six is ‘sex’, and VI is the way six is written in Roman numerals
36 SENSIBILITY – SIB(ling) in SENILITY
38 SPELLBIND – SPELL, + BID around N
41 HIGH-FLYER – HI, + GH (the letters that precede I in the alphabet) + FLY + ER
42 RESTLESS – REST + LESS
45 SUBSOIL – SUB’S OIL
46 STINKY – INKY after (under) ST
47 COUCH – double definition
49 ARSON – cryptic indication

  1. I was wondering about 19ac and 12d; should have seen them both, although I only see the FT maybe twice a year. I had a ? at 35ac, too; aside from the position of ’19’, ‘individual’ seems to be doing double duty. Liked 18ac and 24ac though.
    1. Yes, I liked 18ac too! In 35 ac (which I erroneously referred to as 33ac – now corrrected), I don’t tink ‘individual ‘ is doing double duty – I believe it’s just part of the phrase ‘individual running meeting’.
  2. Hi, I don’t normally comment on the Jumbos because I tend to post my paper copy off once done in the hope of one day winning the prize and can’t usually remember much about the solving experience once the blog comes round. However, I still have the Saturday Review supplement from this edition with all the clues in it and I see that I have circled 44ac and put a question mark by it. The printed version of the clue is: “Presidents go in car, otherwise walk on this for safety (10,8)” with “car” singular. I think I must have solved it ok but the anagrist I was working with had a missing “s” which always makes me wonder if I’m the one missing something rather than the clue.
    1. You definitely weren’t missing anything – the online version which I worked from had the necessary “Presidents go in cars…”. Does anyone know whether a correction was ever posted in the paper edition?
      1. I also noted the false anagram, so I checked here to see what was going on. Checking just now in the Crossword Club I see that the false anagram is still there, so I am surprised helen found a correct version.

  3. Thanks Helen for explaining HELL-BENT,wrote it in but could not parse it.
    Ong’ara,
    Nairobi.
  4. I wondered if the parsing was CHARPERSON (the PC version of charwoman) around I, leaving the definition as just “individual running meeting”. The only problem with that is that CHARPERSON doesn’t appear to be a word …
    1. That’s a clever idea that hadn’t crossed my mind – as you say, CHARPERSON isn’t a real word, but if the clue had included a ‘maybe’ or ‘?’ it would have probably become acceptable!

’33ac’ now corrected to ’35ac’, by the way.
