Times Jumbo 1259

  1. I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that ‘Rome’ in 4 ac. was clued as something like ‘city from the West’. As with ‘Air’ in ‘Iberia’ on Wednesday’, shouldn’t this be ‘city from the East’? Four-footer
    1. I think you’re right – didn’t catch on to this first time round! Unless we’re both missing something, it should be ‘city from the east’ as you suggest, or else ‘city to the west’, not ‘city from the west’.

Does anyone else have thoughts on this?

    1. Hi Ong’ara – yes, I liked 53ac too.

‘gel’ is a (rather outdated) upper-class English pronunciation of ‘girl’.

‘corpse’ can mean – in the theatrical context in the UK; I’m not sure whether it’s much used elsewhere – to unintentionally step out of character by laughing, or to be so incapacitated by laughter as to have to stop performing.

      All the best, Helen

  2. I suspect that 4ac is an error for ‘from the east’; ‘to the west’ seems too vague for Rome. DNK PETRISSAGE (LOI); and I was slowed down some by TENDERFEET, as I would have expected ‘tenderfoots’. The word is a so-called exocentric compound, which regularize: sabretooths, lowlifes, bigfoots, etc. COD to 33d.
  3. Tks for yr excellent blog of an enjoyable puzzle. I needed your explanation for ROTGUT. PETRISSAGE was new to me too, but I got it from wordplay.
