Times Jumbo 1219

Not too challenging, I thought, though it introduced me to a new word (the ancient people at 54ac) and a phrase (51ac) that I’d never encountered before with that particular meaning.

As always, * indicates an anagram.

  1. Edom is mainly (but not exclusively) a biblical term, and only old testament at that .. so probably there was some tribal activity under that name but no actual historical facts available.

Not come across (a-cross?) cattalos, before…

  2. Several DNKs, including of course CATTALO (which also isn’t in my ODE); also 25d in either sense (fortunately I knew the castle), 44ac, 7ac DEF. 13d took a long time, as ‘trick’ would not have occurred to me as a definition for SHANGHAI. The Cree are Canadian Indians.
