Times Jumbo 1119

Not exceptionally difficult, and containing (I think) relatively few obscure answers. Getting the answer to 35dn relies on knowing what photographers in the UK make their subjects say in order to elicit smiles – what’s the equivalent in other countries?

  1. Agree that this was at the easier end of the Jumbo spectrum. I have one question for the setter though: 37d was it supposed to be ‘three’ or ‘their’?
  2. DNK HEADER, but it wasn’t much of a problem with the checkers. Did wonder about 37d–and there’s another typo in this week’s Jumbo. LOI 33d.
  3. Thanks for blogging,Helen.I get the first ‘spread’ but not the second one, someone help.LOI 48d,liked ‘by’.(ONG’ARA,NAIROBI)
    1. The second ‘spread’ refers to the food on the table. SOED sv ‘spread’ 5 ‘a large or elaborate meal or buffet, esp. as provided for a guest, etc. colloq. E19’ and gives a quote ‘Kate goggled when she .. saw the food. “What a spread!” she exclaimed.’
