Times Cryptic Jumbo No 1304 (13/1/2018): Straight Sets

I don’t think Times puzzles get more straight-down the line than this one. Technically very good and with some fine surface readings, but without an awful lot to talk about really. My experience has also been soured on two counts: first of all I typoed on the Club Forum for a terrible score of 580 (at least creating the pleasingly apt SLPADASH to cross with a clue about Icarus coming a cropper) and then managed to have all my down parsings eaten by LiveJournal when I went to do a final preview, forcing me to write them all up again. Oh well, I am the “Friday blogger” and this puzzle hit the streets on a 13th, so what can you do?

I did enjoy the supporting cast of this puzzle, especially poor Molly Malone, and my clue of the day does go to the clever and classical 33dn in spite of my woes. Thanks setter!

  1. I found this easier than many, taking 65:34 to complete. As V says, nothing to frighten the horses. Took me ages to think of the second word for STRETCHER though. As usual I can’t remember much about the puzzle, except that my brain felt a bit less frazzled than usual at the end. Thanks setter and V.
  2. A bit of a slog at 1:37:57 (a good excuse for not finishing the decorating) but I got there in the end.

Didn’t quite understand MALONE and MARLENE DIETRICH was unparsed apart from the bags of money bit, so thanks as always for a fine blog.

  3. 47:24, so must have been quite straightforward. PLANE TABLE unknown to me too. I also liked the reference to the irish shellfish seller at 14a. I also liked the sporting cryptics at 34a and 53a. The &lit 55a my COD, though. Quite fun in all. Thanks setter and V.
  4. A couple of DNKs–RAGGA, AGERATUM, PLANE TABLE–that last one causing a lot of trouble because I felt sure the first word was going to be SPACE. Liked 12d and 39ac.
  5. Not too hard though SAURIAN & PLANET ABLE took me ages to crack.COD STEAL-THY.
