Times Cryptic Jumbo 1616 – one for his nob

Evenin’ all. Sorry this is up later than normal, been sidetracked by work and family stuff.

Another gentler Jumbo offering this week, keeping me busy for no more than 40 minutes including working out all the parsings.

First in was VICTORIA CROSS and last was EXTENUATE.

If any of my explanations don’t make sense then feel free to ask for further elucidation.

The technical stuff:

Clues are in blue (unless you’re in dark mode) with the definition underlined.  Anagram indicators are in bold italics.

Notation:

DD: Double definition
CD: Cryptic definition
DDCDH: DD/CD hybrid where a straight definition is combined with a cryptic hint.

&Lit: “all in one” where the entire clue is both definition and wordplay.

(fodder)* denotes an anagram of the letters in the brackets.

Rounded brackets are also used to add further clarity

Squiggly brackets {} indicate parts of a word not used

Deletions are struck out

Square brackets [] expand an abbreviation or shortening like W[est]

  1. Yes. Good evening. This one took me 1hr 21mins, so not too many problems, but I really struggled to parse GENERATOR (it has far more of the general than we needed) and I didn’t immediately see the notes in A&E or the elected official in ANDANTINO, so I liked them when I did.

I liked TWO-BY-FOUR – and somehow recognised it as a piece of wood – while not knowing the significance (if any) of those particular measurements. I thought I might find a two-by-four room in King of the Road but no, it’s an eight-by-twelve four-bit room. And that’s the earworm for today.

I particularly liked ON OFFER, with the switch positions, and SQUARE ROOTS

  2. I’ve don’t keep track of Jumbo solving times, but I noted on my copy that I found this quite easy and completed it in one session, which is quite unusual for me. The only answer I recall looking twice at was BREWPUB as it’s not a term I’m familiar with although I have visited several pubs known as microbreweries.

  3. No horses frightened here. I did wonder about 9dn: I suspect this may be a very UK-centric usage which would make it more or less unsolvable for our American friends.

  4. SICKIE was indeed my LOI, and I guess I just guessed it, though probably looking it up before writing it in. I also guessed that Harry in 19ac was Potter, but didn’t know the friend’s name. I was surprised to see ‘public’ as part of the anagrist for 3d. Biffed TWO-BY-FOUR, never figured out how it worked.

  5. Gentle indeed at 35:06

Thanks for the blog Penfold. Just a minor point – the definition of 44a is “unconventional sort” I think.
