Times Cryptic Jumbo 1419: Godownly Knows

Apologies for the delay on this one – I’d almost finished writing it up before I was haled off to a bar followed by a drunken party, and you wouldn’t have gotten any sense out of me at the end of proceedings last night.

I very much enjoyed the Shakespearean miscreant knowledge required for this one (bastardly Edgar and roguish Nim) which sat well with a slightly elevated flavour throughout. Thanks to the setter! 13dn is almost as ridiculous as the ALMA-ATA clue the other day, though it does have the advantage that you can just fill it in from the crossers without any idea at all what it’s going on about.

Hope you liked it too, and just remember, to paraphrase Heidi Klum on Project Runway, one day you’re an inspector, and the next day you’re an out-spector!

  1. This seems to have made little impression on me, as I have no notes on my copy. I knew GODOWN, which was fortunate, as for me (and Murcans in general, perhaps) the expression is GO OVER LIKE … Falstaff’s underling is Corporal NYM, so the homophone (for non-rhoticists) is just ‘sinner’; not that it matters. V, you’ve got a typo at 22d: HIC is ‘this’ in Latin.

  2. Several went in unparsed so thanks for the explanations which I doubt I’d have ever worked out (e.g.LEAD BALLOON / SYNONYM) and I’m glad I didn’t waste more time on them.
  3. 33:14 after a slow start, but accelerating when I got to the Downs. Several unknowns I derived from wordplay and had to check before submitting – The Shakespearean son and poet at 29A, OBEAH, MITE, PRIMERO, EOLITHIC and Corporal Nim. I liked UNLIMITED, SPECTATOR and SANCTUM. Thanks V and setter.
  4. Mods were from the 1960’s, not the 1950’s. The latter dating would perhaps suggest DETE which, as everyone here knows, is a small railway re-crewing depot and developing town on the Bulawayo-Hwange-Victoria Falls railway line in Zimbabwe, but it doesn’t actually fit.
