Times Cryptic Jumbo 1339: Cracking Toast

One of the best Jumbos I can remember blogging, this – quite often there’s the feeling that a Jumbo setter might have (completely understandably, really!) gone into churn mode to get the job done, but there are a lot of clever, original, and/or legitimately hilarious clues here. Big round of applause to the setter. Lots of potential CODs but I’ve just noticed again that 53ac’s surface is a brilliant homage to Morse, so maybe I’ll give it to that. 1. I saw a comment somewhere the day after this came out saying that it was very difficult, so I got round to tackling it with a certain amount of trepidation. Pleased to say that I thought it hit the spot precisely – a proper challenge without being impenetrable. It took me a while but I never got stuck and enjoyed every minute, which I often cannot say with jumbos .. thank you clever setter, as Myrtilis would say.
As a member of MAS (Maginot line Appreciation Society) I have always felt it has had a bad press. It did exactly what it was supposed to do and was never breached. Those dastardly Germans had to go round the end of it, and sneak in via Belgium .. perhaps it should have been built circular?
  2. 69 minutes, much longer than usual but with no cause for resentment. I don’t think I knew the BOTTLENECK GUITAR as such, but I now know what it sounds like.
Lots of clues to make you go wow! from WALLACE the bricklayer to the dead dodo (all those Ds in a tricky anagram) to (yes indeed!) the Morse tribute resurrecting the immortal “evening all” copper from his Blue Lamp demise.
I reckon it must be easier with all the extra squares, but I still think an unforced pangram is an additional treat, especially when it includes the cleverly clued DIDDLY SQUAT.
Thank for the explications V. This was a special.
  3. I did find this harder than usual, taking 96:15 to get through, and I needed help with a couple, TRIMERODONS, SAMIZDAT and ZOOPLANKTON. Enjoyable enough puzzle though. Thanks setter and V.
  4. Never figured out 49ac; put in ORAL with no justification other than ‘oral agreement’. 45ac had me stumped until I got 30d, when all became clear. DNK DIMETRODONS. SAMIZDAT on the other hand was a gimme, one of the very few in this puzzle. I had GUITAR early on at 11d, and I was embarrassed to see how long it took me to get the BOTTLENECK part, as I eat bottleneck up. Mississippi Fred McDowell, for instance (note the fingering):

I’ve got ‘COD’ written in the margin by a half-dozen or so clues, but if forced to choose, maybe 36d.

  5. Got through this eventually with some resort to aids so it wasn’t really satisfying. There were three or four answers I just didn’t know and was unable to reach via wordplay. I had one error at 49 where all I could come up with was ORAL as a form of agreement but with no idea how it fitted the rest of the clue (which it wouldn’t because it was wrong).

I note that since the puzzle was published the term DIDDLY-SQUAT has gained some currency with reference to Boris J’s view of the Chequers agreement.

  6. This one was harder than recent jumbi. FOI AS(LEE)P. COD SYRINGE (shot provider… he he).
    Ong’ara,
    Nairobi.
  7. Defeated, bizarrely, by 37dn. I had THUMB_I_C_S but couldn’t come up with anything to fill the gaps. Having looked it up in every available dictionary I still don’t really know what a THUMBPIECE is. Great puzzle apart from that funny little blind spot.
  8. I’m totally with you V – a cracking Jumbo. I struggled mightily with this taking 107:21 to complete resorting to aids to check SAMIZDAT, ZOOPLANKTON, BOTTLENECK GUITAR, and DIMETRODONS… which seems to gave gone walkies in the blog. lol. DIDDLY-SQUAT my favourite. Ordinarily I would run out of steam taking so long, but it kept me interested throughout. What fun, but hard!
