Times Cryptic Jumbo 1289: His Farce From His Elbow

Soooooooo, the idea is to come back to this and decorate it with some witty repartee between now (Friday lunchtime) and tomorrow morning: the flaw in this plan is that I’m off to York on the 4pm train and depending on whether our host John Henderson proves a good influence or not I may not be in a fit state to do anything of the kind. If you’re reading this paragraph then you’ll have to assume that that’s what happened, and all I can say is, BLAME JOHN. But we’ll see.

This Jumbo is fairly straightforward, as many of them area, but one thing that did catch my eye was the inclusion of Mr Brian Rix (1924-2016). I’m not saying that setters are ambulance-chasers or anything, and I’m sure everyone is appropriately sad about the great man’s passing, but sometimes a Times setter’s eyes must light up from the new possibilities, as here. RIP Brian!

  1. Going by last night’s festivities, I would think John himself is most likely to be in a slightly delicate condition this morning! Anyway, I seem to have completed this puzzle successfully, but it took 1:10:09 to get there. QUADRAGESIMA brought back memories of the Latin names for various periods of the ecclesiastical year from my youth. CHORDATE was unknown but easily gettable. An enjoyable puzzle all in all. Now it’s time to recommence the festivities at the pub over the road and see how we got on with last night’s quiz. Thanks setter and V.
  2. A couple of DNKs–DIDCOT, ACETAL–but they weren’t a problem. And a couple of NHOs–never heard ofs–RIX and HOBBS, but given the checkers they weren’t that much of a problem either. Glad to find out that I had no reason to be bothered by my ignorance here. More problematic were trying to remember QUADRISEMA–on edit: you see?–, and trying to get ‘frenetic’ out of my mind once I’d determined it wasn’t going to work at 42d. I chuckled briefly at the definition of 54ac.

  3. I appear to have done this online despite having the paper version, which is unusual for me, so I don’t have any notes. I found this fairly straightforward, finishing in 48:03. Like John and Kevin I had a couple of unknowns successfully derived from the wordplay – CHORDATE and PROCAINE in my case. I enjoyed the GRUNTERS turning into CHIPOLATAS in the next clue. Thanks for the blog V, and I hope you had a good time in York.
  4. The only problem with 50dn is that Rix never wrote a farce in his life, only produced and acted in them.

I didn’t do this puzzle. I think it was the Jumbo I read the clues for 5 minutes without any answers springing to mind so I found something else to do.
