Times Crossword Championship – first qualifiying puzzle

This appeared today and can be printed in a clear PDF from this page.

My guess is that links to the later qualifiers – on (Thursdays) May 13, June 10, and July 15 – will all be on the same page. Entries must be postmarked by the following Thursday, so we’ll have reports on the Friday 8 days after each qualifier.

If you’re new to the championship, there is more information on my unofficial page about it.

  1. I note from my copy of The Times today that the qualifying puzzle “will appear today on page XX”. I’ve been staring at page 20 for ages now, and there’s still no sign!

PS I’ve just realised XX is some sort of code for 62. Thanks for the link!

  2. I’m afraid that’s currently showing our favourite bird-on-a-box motif.

  3. I would think that when someone typed the pointer that the puzzle “will appear today on page XX” they had no idea which page it would be and so they put in XX (knowing that it would anyway be in two digits).

Obviously, no alert was given out and the line went without being updated subsequently.

In newspaper production such disasters happen unless the subs are careful.

    1. Same thing happens at the Observer, where Azed prizes are sometimes won by Namey Namey at Address Address.
