Times Championship – a date for some of your diaries

I’ve just heard that this year’s championship will be on Sunday October 11th. As far as I know location and everything else are the same as the last few years, except that the puzzles will doubtless be harder than last time.

  1. Do you have any particular reason for thinking that the puzzles may be harder this year Peter? I ask because I fondly imagine that I may have a better chance of getting in the top 25 if they are less easy.

    1. Richard Browne told me afterwards that the puzzles were not intended to be as easy as they turned out, and conversely seemed quite happy with the previous two years, when the Grand final winning times were a bit slower than usual. I reckon the average over the years is probably 8-9 minutes a puzzle for the winner – last year Mark Goodliffe’s average was a shade under 6, and in the previous two years, my average was about 12:35 in 2007, and Helen Ougham’s about 10:35 the year before)
  2. Would you believe… checks schedule for day job… I’m scheduled to be off from October 10-13. Hmmm…
