Times 27436 – a shell game?

Time taken: 10:22 but with one very careless error as I was so convinced 1 across had a double L that I forced it in without thinking about where the I needed to go. So here’s everyone’s chance to beat the blogger, whee!

Odd puzzle this one, with a few devices and words I’m used to seeing in Mephisto rather than in the daily. When a Z and an X appeared early on in my solving I was on the lookout for a pangram, but it is missing a few letters. I did a double take at seeing SHELL twice, clued in a different way each time.

Away we go…

  1. Rather busy so this only got done a day late – stillworking on 27,437!

I was an AUXILLARY! For the record:-)

FOI 3dn Leech (Why isn’t George be a tad more explanatory?)

LOI 13dn which was entirely wrong JAPETH!

    COD 13ac EGGSHELL

    WOD 19ac CHUTZPAH

  2. ABETTOR – Could we make up our minds whether to spell this ‘abetter’ (as in two recent crosswords) or this spelling? Particularly as this one has an unchecked O. FWIW, this spelling comes way more naturally to me.
    1. This is a mistake surely. Plan + etre + e in that order. Not plan + etre surrounding e.
      1. Thank goodness! I’ve waded through all 60-odd comments , and thought I was the only one who was aggrieved by this – I got PLANE TREE quite quickly, but was confused by the insertion of the ‘tour’ instruction – it should have been ‘with’ or a similar indicator – sloppy clueing.
        1. not if the touring is done by the R and E of “ETRE” – sloppy solving
