Times 26,807: Art For Art’s Sake

I solved this puzzle feeling somewhat under duress last night, in the wee small hours after a convivial evening, and while my run of sub-10-minute times has not been shattered, the relative straightforwardness of the parsings below makes me think that I actually made heavy weather of this one. Quite a lot of the answers did go straight in upon reading the clue, but then I floundered in other places, ending sluggishly at the 9ac/3dn crosser where I couldn’t think what to put before ASSES (if not PALLI) at all, and cursed the amount of time I spent learning the names of books of the Bibles when I could have been concentrating harder on maths and the sciences, as the obtuse angle clue became my LOI.

Or perhaps this was harder than I’m giving it credit for: certainly the phrasing of the clues seemed unusual in places, and I wasn’t entirely familiar with, e.g. the trespasser, the pony (it’s normally a dog, right?), and the office (in a clue that would have gone much more smoothly if my initial gambler’s biff of MONTEVIDEO had paid off). Classicsphobes may have found themselves stymied by the run of Latin and Greek words clustered at the start of the Downs, and hopefully none of the people who didn’t know HABAKKUK from their elbow earlier this week attempted to enter SOMINIACS, SOMANIACS or even INSOMNIACS at 4dn. Anyway I liked both the artist clues for lending this puzzle some visual colour, but I’ll award my Clue of the Day to 6dn, for the bibulousness of its theme and the well-concealed definition in “funny”. Many thanks to our setter!

  1. A DNF for me, with much of the left-hand-side left undone in my hour. Unlike yesterday’s, I wasn’t enjoying it, and looking at the answers I think I’m rather a long way from the wavelength of this one.

For example, I’ve heard of “lav” for “office” before, but only once, in another crossword, and I’ve never heard of VALPARAISO itself, so even with only a few letters missing I didn’t get there. Plenty else beyond my ken, like INGRES, the cathars, both “demit” and DEMITASSES, SIMONIACS and so on.

At this stage in my solving career, I think there were just a few too many unknowns in both the wordplay and the answers for me to make progress. Oh well, some you win…

  2. 50 mins with Bonne Maman damson conserve (so posh). The major hold up was the 4dn-5dn/9ac section. I was convinced Asses=Glasses, but nothing ends ..GL. Not plants today, just bits of them! And a random bloke, I suspect much posher than Les, Des and Al.
Mostly I liked the artists. Thanks erudite setter and V.
PS I think the only anagrams were: “Everest was a mission.”

    1. What others made a fuss over I found easy! And visa-versa. A long country hour.

FOI 14ac VALPARAISO(philately gets you everywhere!)a large port and second city of Chile.

SOI 20ac KLEE I used to work with his photgrapher son Thom in Switzerland and Germany many years ago.

13dn CREATE was one of my dear mother’s words.

      LOI 27ac CRADLE.

      COD INGRES (as per w.notlob).

WOD 4dn SIMONIACS which I DNK.

Hey Mr. Tangerine Man! Au Bonne Maman Damson preserve – swipe me how the other half live! Solid silver spoon required no doubt. I shall be making Spanish geengage jam on the week-end.

I managed three small croissants – one with Marmite one with
Bonne Maman Bitter Orange Marmalade and last with Spanish Acacia honey (cloudy). All accomapied by Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee (Tranquility village of course).

Edited at 2017-08-18 09:19 am (UTC)

      1. Marmite on a croissant? I won’t knock it ’til I’ve tried it.
Let us know how the greengage jam turns out. You weren’t very forthcoming on your pink grapefruit.
    2. I was also fixated on GLASSES at at 9ac and almost convinced myself that RUMGLASSES might be the answer.
  3. 13:58 … interesting puzzle with a mix of the very easy and the distinctly tricky.

If I knew SIMONIACS I didn’t know I knew it, but it wasn’t too hard to figure out once I’d finally untangled 1a COMPRESS (very clever clue).

COD to SUCCESSION … thanks setter and verlaine

  4. How in the world does “create” = “fuss”? I was sure something must have been left out of that clue. “Put down” seems a bit of a stretch for “demit” (in the archaic sense of “dismiss”) but I can’t see how to get from “fuss” to “create” at all. One may create a scene, make a fuss, but “fuss” as a verb does not mean “create” in any dictionary I could find. I did finish this, but not all in one session. RADIAN was also my last, and DEMITASSE took longer than it should’ve.

Edited at 2017-08-18 07:47 am (UTC)

          1. I knew it, but I’ve never heard it actually used, and would assume that the word only ever comes up in practice in remote parts of the North of England, if at all.
            1. As a UK southerner (until recently) I’ve heard it used quite commonly for at least fifty years. – joekobi
              1. ‘Stop creating or you’ll get what for’ – a common enough phrase heard in childhood, perhaps not spoken of in these snowflake days.
      1. Must be British usage – I hesitated for a long time because I didn’t recognise that definition either.
        1. Don’t know about ODO, but the Oxford Dictionary of English (that came with my Mac!) says:

2 [no object] British informal make a fuss; complain: little kids create because they hate being ignored.

          1. Thanks. I don’t have a cyber dictionary except the ones I can find online, and I didn’t find it at Oxford. Maybe you have to have a paid version?
            1. Possibly. Apple tend to license good stuff for their users; I suppose that’s one of the reasons the kit costs so bloody much. I find the built-in dictionary great for finding out what I got wrong in a crossword, as it’ll look things up in both the Oxford dictionary and on Wikipedia at the same time, so it’ll normally find an answer, even for the Times’s obscurities!
            2. Actually Guy, I just google “define: create” (or whatever is required). The first result returned (if the word exists) is always a dictionary-type entry which I believe comes from Oxford Dictionary Online, though I may be mistaken on that point.
              1. Believe me, I did try that. But the Oxford link I looked at, and the Merriam Webster, and the Collins… didn’t have that def.
      1. No, that was my intended sous-entendu from my opening comment. Hence the subject line.

Edited at 2017-08-18 08:09 am (UTC)

  5. Well, lo and behold! I thought you had to subscribe to have the OED online, but I was able to search for “CREATE” as a verb, and I did find.
    f. intr. colloq. To make a fuss, grumble, complain; (also occasionally) to shout. Also with about, at.

1919 Athenæum 8 Aug. 729/1 ‘Creating’ is presumably an abbreviation of ‘creating (or making) a fuss’.
1932 S. Gibbons Cold Comfort Farm xviii. 250 Create! I thought ‘e’d ‘ave to be picked off the ceiling.
1932 S. Gibbons Cold Comfort Farm xviii. 251 ‘E always creates at me something awful when I’ve finished telling ‘im anything spiteful.
1955 ‘E. C. R. Lorac’ Ask Policeman viii. 92 The old lady came and created about her nephew living here.
1959 M. Hastings Hour-glass to Eternity i. iii. 87 What does he do but come aboard and start creating about the loss of time!
1987 M. Nabb Marshal & Murderer v. 82 She used to be shouting and creating until all hours.

Thanks, everybody, for trying to straighten me out. It can be difficult at times.

      1. Damn, so it is! I looked at Collins last night and didn’t see it. Maybe I just couldn’t believe it was possible. Rather an odd locution.
    1. Not sure if you get it overseas but I use the ‘one look’ dictionary app on my iPad and it seems to include all the usual suspects apart from chambers.
  6. Straightforward today except that I didn’t know simoniacs (are they different from simaniacs?) or demit so had to trust the wordplay.
Ch. Queribus and Ch. Peyrepertuse, very atmospheric Cathar castles. And it was the Abbot of Citeaux who said “Kill them all, God will know his own” when asked how to tell Cathars and Catholics apart, at the siege of Beziers. It was no fun being a Cathar…
  7. Is no-one else familiar with the Tasmanian impressionist Basil ENGROS? Fair enough then.

Tough day at the office. Took a long time over VALPARAISO, DEMITASSES, SUCCESSION, RECREATED and USURPER. And not long enough over the artist apparently.

Nice meaty challenge. Thanks setter and V.

  8. 40 minutes for this with the low downs the problem area. MEDUSAE not known, but soluble from clue and crossers, nor STAMINA, which I assumed was the Latin plural but again needed all the crossers. I knew of simony and eventually spotted the mixed-up mission to get SIMONIACS. I did know of the Cathars, persecuted for a bit of Gnosticism. It doesn’t pay to be too knowing. You soon find that out on this site. RADIAN was a write in once obtuse had been rejected. DEMITASSES then biffed from the known tasse. I got VALPARAISO early on with South America being a focus in 1961 O level Geography. The nice thing about Chile was that you could use a ruler to sketch its shape. My daughter once had a Sheltie the pony book as I recall. She doesn’t. COD INGRES. Thank you V and setter.
  9. After about 45 mins had blanks at VALPARAISO and SIMONIACS. Too tricky. Almost worked out the corrupt clergy, and almost got the town, but the office could so easily have been con, den mod, etc … Have found most of them tricky this week. Maybe I left my mojo in Scotland last week…

  10. 25.26, which seems to be a smidge longer than my new average, and quite relieved to finish.
I so nearly parsed VALPARAISO, getting everything except the bog standard LAV for office, because I got fixated on the office being OVAL with the Old somehow displaced by the wordplay.
I’m prepared to concede there were some obscurities in this one, especially since I would have spelt CATHARSIS with a K. We’ve had SIMONY before, but not, as far as I can see, its derived offender. And I took on trust that STAMINA was an acceptable plural of STAMEN.
But I’m not annoyed. Only La Grande Odalisque looks back in Ingres.
    1. Which poor soul was it who exited from a recent Times Champs with an unfortunate choice if KLEPTOKRAT over KLEPTOCRAT as the answer to a critic Dec? It’s hard enough minding one’s Ps and Qs without having to get into Ks and Cs…
      1. There was a dispute here a couple of days ago re a QC about whether the Greek island should be KOS or COS. Fortunately the first letter was checked so most of us bunged in C and never gave it a second thought.
  11. Limped home in 39 minutes, having got 2/3 done in good time. Unknowns such as the pony, the clergy and the angle caused much of the problem, and like our blogger I really struggled to find something to put in front of my ASSES.
  12. Oddly for me as a maths person, RADIAN was one of the last in. Could one clue DEGREE as ‘a particular angle’? Radians are a measure of angle. About 47′ today, NW last in. Knew MEDUSAE (tentacles look like Gorgons’ hair), but like others got wrapped up with glasses and dnk CATHAR. A worthy challenge. Thanks v and setter.
      1. I assumed my floundering a bit on this clue was just me being sufficiently mathmological, glad to discover that it wasn’t playing 100% fair after all. If only it had randomly been my initial thought, REFLEX…
      2. I dunno. You could clue “foot” as “a particular length”; a radian is a particular angle, after all…
  13. No biffing in this puzzle, which means it must be Friday. Various things I only realised I knew once I deciphered the wordplay, such as SHELTIE (I’d initially thought it was a dog, and the dictionary confirms that it can be a dog or a horse, which is a very imprecise definition, if you ask me) and SIMONIACS (I was another who worked it out from knowing “simony”, which gave me a flashback to studying James Joyce at A-level back in 19-mumble-mumble). Also had to keep telling myself that even pop stars don’t come up with names like EUCELL for their children, so I should think again.
    1. They’re much more imaginative than Eucell. Forget Zoe Bowie, and consider Heavenly Hirani Tiger Lily (Geldof?), or brother and sister Dweezil and Moonunit Zappa.
Well over 30 minutes, right off the wavelength, NW impenetrable.
      1. “Zoe” Bowie actually started life as Zowie Bowie (son not daughter) but in adulthood he adopted the much more normal moniker Duncan Jones. He has subsequently directed several terrific films. Both ‘Moon’ and ‘Source Code’ are brilliant sci-fi thrillers. MikeLima
    2. We’ll need to keep the possibility of an unusual Sheltie in mind next time the clueing is for cross-blend and Tigon or Liger don’t fit the letter count.
  14. I also struggled but was really pleased when I got there in the end, only to find I had fallen at the final hurdle by putting RADIAL instead of RADIAN at 3dn. I’d not heard of the latter and I never thought of ‘radiance’ for ‘brightness’ so wordplay was no help.

I felt I had really achieved something by constructing the unknown VALPARAISO and SIMONIAC from wordplay so it was disappointing to end up with one wrong letter.

Edited at 2017-08-18 09:10 am (UTC)

  15. 29.25. Agreeable medley, not too deadly, crabwise clockwise more or less stead’ly. – joekobi
  16. 25:54. It felt like this one was designed specifically to expose my ignorance. Some things I didn’t know at all (VALPARAISO, RADIAN), but many others that I sort of half knew, but where I didn’t realise that I half knew them until after solving the clue by another route, so the half knowledge was never any use other than to confirm the answer: CATHARs, MEDUSAE, SIMONIAC (by association with simony), DEMIT, OVERSTEER, STAMINA, SHELTIE. So my solve involved a lot of painstaking construction from wordplay.
No complaints though: unlike some other puzzles I could mention, all of the obscurities in this one are indicated by proper cryptic clues. You might argue that 4dn is a bit unfair but SOMINIACS looked considerably less likely to me even before I had thought of simony.
My last in was DEMITASSES: a word I definitely did know, but like others I couldn’t get the idea that it would end in GLASSES out of my mind, even after concluding that it couldn’t possibly.

Edited at 2017-08-18 09:36 am (UTC)

    1. Mmm, I wanted it to be RUMGLASSES quite badly. I drink out of those much more than DEMITASSES.
      1. Yes I considered that too, although in a crossword it would have to be a RUMMER, surely.
I considered several other things: I’ve had a ZZ Top Cheap Sunglasses earworm since doing the puzzle.
  17. As Sotira comments above, a strange mixture of very easy and unknowns, most of which were parsable. I thought at first that I had the day of the week wrong, and that today was Monday… DNF as I had to come here for INGRES.
  18. I managed to complete this in 35:15. There were a lot of answers right at the edge of my ken, dragged to the front by the wordplay. INGRES from WP only, although he did sound as though he could be an artist. I hadn’t heard of VALPARAISO until I started going to Saltburn Folk Club, but one of our regulars regularly sings a son called Valparaiso, so I bunged it in taking LAV for office on trust, and wondering, like Z, if there was something to do with OVAL office or just the bog standard meaning. 3d, 4d, and 9a held me up at the end, as I also speculated about GLASSES. The SIMONIACS were, as previously indicated, dragged from the far reaches of my brain by a feeling that there was a naughty Simon somewhere in the scriptures. I didn’t know the Cathars, but with C_T…SIS, there wasn’t much doubt about the definition. Liked WISECRACK. Create for fuss was no problem. An enjoyable puzzle. Thanks setter and V.
    1. Simon has done pretty well for itself as a name, considering Simon Magus’s actions will live in infamy forever… you don’t see so many Herods, Judases and Pontiuses these days. Well, maybe one Pontius.
      1. Quite right. I was amazed to find myself playing snooker with a chap called Cain last week!
  19. Couldn’t be bothered to see this one through to a conclusion, 4 missing in all, mostly in the NW.
  20. Knew Ingres from my time working in IT (fending off the b@&£&@&s from Oracle and Microshit, sorry Microsoft). But still a DNF as I was stumped (watching cricket again!) with 4d. Finished (nearly) in the NW, where a good Lancastrian should always finish. Thanks all.
  21. I enjoyed this one. As a mathematician I got RADIAN early and my LOI was EUGENE. I even realized it was probably GENE but was fixated on it being GENE with stuff in it. I thought USURPER very clever, I think that was my one before last in, when I clicked on how the clue parsed and who “one taking excessive interest” was.

BTW there is a minor error in the blog post. You have INCHES for 11A instead of INCHED (although the exposition makes it clear that you meant INCHED).

  22. 29 minutes for this enjoyable offering, with nothing I didn’t know, so no need to employ the Gallers Clause.
    1. As the offical arbiter of these questions I can confirm that everything in this puzzle qualifies as Worth Knowing, since it passed the vital ‘did I solve it’ test.
  23. About 30 minutes, but I had RADIAL. II just biffed it in, not understanding the parsing. Nor, apparently, did I really hit on the fact that my answer didn’t match the definition. Oh well. Regards to all.
  24. 27 minutes, all done, dragged the SIMONIACS out from somewhere deep in the cortex. 1d my FOI, 2d my LOI once I realised it was USA not just US.
  25. I didn’t do the puzzle beyond a few clues -too hard.
But I remember from my French lessons at school that a “Violon D’Ingres” is a hobby. So he’s a painter I’ve always had in mind – who presumably liked the violin. David
    1. Thanks for reminding me of that expression, David. I had forgotten it, but I do remember that for a long time I thought it was ‘violon dingue’.
Ingres was supposedly more proud of his violin playing than his painting, so visitors to his studio to see the latter would instead be subjected to the former, which was of a markedly less exalted standard. So a ‘violon d’Ingres’ refers specifically to an artistic or similar pursuit that someone talented in something else practices badly, but with more interest and/or pride.

Edited at 2017-08-18 06:50 pm (UTC)

  26. Another one who said stxff it and bunged in RADIAL because they failed to grasp the significance of ‘church’?
And is simony like pauly, petery and johnny only different?
  27. Thirty-seven minutes for me, with which I’m fairly happy. LOI was, not surprisingly, SIMONIACS – even with all the checkers and the anagram fodder, it just didn’t look right. VALPARAISO was half-remembered from somewhere, as was INGRES, though I did spend a long time thinking it had to be Ancres and trying to see why.

I’m now back from holiday, and enjoying a bit of proper English drizzle.

  28. Somewhat late, but I note that nobody else has owned up to thinking of PARAMARIBO, as I did, before settling on VALPARAISO. So there’s more than one soldier in South America!
  29. I had about two thirds of this done in around 40 mins yesterday lunchtime but a few drinks in the pub after work with a couple of friends meant that no further solving was done yesterday (I do not have the same half-cut solving ability which some others seem to possess). Finished the rest off this morning in about 10 mins. FOI 5ac. LOI 9ac. Valparaiso known as the location of one of the racetracks in the PlayStation computer game Wipeout which I last played about 20 years ago. Knew catharsis but not the Cathars. Thought “one taking excessive interest” in 18dn was really good. “Create” for “fuss” an unfamiliar usage to me. Simony known so Simoniacs not too much of a stretch. Knew the gorgon so the swimmers weren’t too difficult. For me, the main holdups were seeing past “glasses” at 9ac, working out 3dn, seeing “success” rather than “wealth” for prosperity in 17ac, and working out 13dn and 18dn. A few tricky ones in here so I was very pleased to complete all correct.
