Times 24954 — “Interruptus”, as the priests said to the hesitators

Solving time: not recorded.

Couldn’t record a time. Done in various places including a panel-beater’s shop and on the bus home. But I felt this could have been a good half-hour puzzle under STP. Most trouble in the NW corner where (horror!) I was fooled by the anagram (4dn) and made other silly errors.

Only 28 clues today; so you need a few long answers to get started. And note what may be a record number of ER/RE-constructions without a queen to be seen.

Apologies to Tim for missing yesterday’s blog. I was caught up in a tense game of Scopa when the blog came up.

Across
 1 DOSS{i}ER.
5 DOGBERRY. DO G{ood} and ERR inside BY. The night constable from Much Ado.
9 BELITTLE. Take the A from BATTLE and replace with our favourite (and first) priestly person, ELI.
10 AWEIGH. Homophonic for ‘away’.
11 GOTCHA. GOTH with C (ca, about) inside and A. (Not what I was saying much during the Scopa round.)
12 MU,SQUASH. Our first (reversed) hesitation-marker (UM).
14 BINARY SYSTEM. Anagram: ‘mess by in-tray’.
17 INCAN,DESCENT.
20 MAN,DRAKE.
22 PASS {i} ON.
23 AGHA,ST. I take it that the ‘goes down’ bit is a case of redundancy meaning ‘goes down in the little white squares’.
25 REV,E(ILL)E. Our second priestly person. ILL (bad) in the middle letters of {w}EE{k}.
26 PROP(O,S)ER. PROPER (right) inc. O (ring) and S{peech}.
27 RI(DIN)G. Odd letters of DeIgN inside RIG.
Down
 2 ORE,GON{e}.
3 SWITCH,BOARD. First tempted by NOTICEboard, with the implied ‘give NOTICE to’ for ‘change’.
4 RETRAINED. The anagram I couldn’t see for toffee: ‘and retire’. Y’all know what I was looking for.
5 DREAMER. Cryptic def. and perhaps the weakest clue of the day.
 6 G,LASS. Last letter of ‘self-regardinG’ and &lit.
7 Omitted. I’ll never find another one.
8 REGISTER. Our second hesitation-marker (ER) and before that (=‘given pride of place’) RE (about), GIST (heart, as in ‘kernel’, ‘crux’). And there was me thinking ‘given pride of place’ had something to do with LION-ISED.
13 UNSATISFIED. Anagram: ‘I ain’t fussed’.
15 SLEEP OVER. What you’re having if you’re (the clue to) 10ac. The bugle sounding 25ac tells you this too.
16 END,ANGER. Variation on a well-tried theme.
18 S,HEARER. Also an –ER.
19 GO,BLIN{d}.
21 Omitted. The abominable sloat.
24 ASP. It hisses and is venomous. And it’s A, S{ibilance}, P{oison}. My COD for the elegant &lit.

  1. He who confronts too many hesitations …
Tough, but enjoyable, puzzle, with the NE providing the most resistance. A technical DNF, as I had to concult Chambers for the rat at 7ac – disappointing, as I had the reversed ‘um’ but forgot the golden ‘if a u, then a q’ rule.

    COD to RETRAINED.

  2. The lower half went in steadily but I became bogged down particularly in the NW. 11 and 12 were my last in just on 60 minutes.
  3. No time for me either, completed with four interruptions from electrician, plumber, etc

Quite difficult I felt even though my concentration was broken. I solved it NW, SW, SE, NE usually a sign that I’m making hard work of it. I couldn’t remember who SHEARER was and couldn’t get the footballer out of my mind. Good puzzle.

  4. I am with vinyl1 on this one. The bottom half was very straightforward but the top half put up a valiant fight for ages. Good puzzle indeed.
  5. Yet another no time, with a long interruption before completing with the troublesome NW, I think because of particularly oblique definitions (“part of US”, “claim to have made conquest”) and what appears to be an exceptionally evasive anagram at 4.
Some interesting cluing which, if I were in the wrong mood, I would have probably got annoyed with. However, INCANDESCENT and GOBLIN were laugh out loud moments, SHEARER unknown but highly probable, and PROPOSER and ASP particularly well crafted. The snake gets my CoD.
  6. Problems with SE. Provisionally entered PUSH ON for 22ac and did not go back to reconsider; also blind to the reference to St-Paul-type conversion. So DNF. Nonetheless an enjoyable challenge; particularly liked INCANDESCENT.
  7. I’m amazed I got them all right and only after 96 minutes give or take the odd snooze. I could make head nor thaler of the parsing for REGISTER and AGHAST, so a big thankyou to McT. I also didn’t know the Constable, Moira or the Musquash. The NE was almost impenetrable and I thought I was just guessing in the end. A grand puzzle for all that and a big thanks to the setter. COD to RETRAINED for its superbly hidden anagram.
  8. As for others, a puzzle of two halves for me, the bottom half apart from 19 being completed fairly quickly, but I really struggled at the top with nothing but 7 & 14 filled for some time. Eventually solving 8 got me going again, but the NE resisted until I used Bradford’s to get the fur since I couldn’t think of anything beginning MU or RE. Once I had that I completed the rest quickly, with lots of self-kicking moments when I saw how easy some clues really were (4, 6, 8, 10. Five minutes over the hour. Not a good week.

Credit to the setter for the well-disguised anagram and nice surface in 4. I agree with the blogger that the clue to DREAMER was weak. I didn’t like the otiose “goes down” in 23, but the explanation in the blog does give it some validity. still not keen on that sort of trickery. “Yes and no” in 7 also threw me. “Yes” is unnecessary even if explainable on the surface.

Despite the few niggles above, it was a very good puzzle, made tough by some indirect definitions and devious wordplay.

  9. 9:59, with the last 3½ minutes spent staring at 8dn (REGISTER) and finally 12ac (the unknown MUSQUASH), but I notice with horror that I omitted to solve 11ac (GOTCHA) after an abortive early stab at NORMAN, so this was actually an unwitting DNF.  I hadn’t come across BINARY SYSTEM (14ac) in so many words, or Moira SHEARER (18dn), despite having read her husband‘s book All in the Mind: A Farewell To God.

Clue of the Day: 24dn (ASP).

    1. SHEARER was an easy win for me (I don’t usually have too much difficulty with dance-related clues – unlike the dreaded foodie clues).

I got to know her husband’s sister (Morar Ryton) when we competed against each other in Championship finals in the 1970s and 1980s.

  10. 34:57. I agree that this was very tough. I had more problems with NE than NW, particularly Deputy Dawg and Musky.

I emailed 7dPenguin yesterday to ask if he was swotting up on Shakespearean characters ready for 22nd Oct. Going by today I think I’ll add them to the US state capitals and labours of Heracles I’ve decided to try and learn.

The “yes and no” bit of 7 seems superfluous and threw me a bit. I think Incan descent has become a bit of a chestnut.

    1. … were to good effect: I see they qualified for the Europa league, from Dutch Eredivisie play-offs.
Whenever I see their name it brings to mind Spike Milligan’s euphemism “Swonnicles.”

(revisiting old puzzles… finished it this time, didn’t 5 years ago. Am I getting better, or is there residual memory of the more unusual answers?)
      Rob

  11. in wondering whether younger solvers will be put off by clues which refer to a little known scottish ballet dancer from yesteryear? History is one thing, and culture might require a detailed knowledge of Shakespeare’s characters, but Shearer the famous dancer?

Like Penfold, I also was put off by what I also assume was the unnecessary use of “Yes and No” in the ewe clue….or am I missing something?

    1. Whether I’m a “younger solver” or not is a matter of perspective, but I certainly haven’t heard of Moira SHEARER. This is arguably a bit of an obscure reference but I don’t expect to know everything in these puzzles (if I did it would be the triumph of hope over experience) and I for one don’t mind as long as the wordplay offers another way into the clue, which was the case here.
      1. The arguement about the obscurity of SHEARER makes me wonder about the age of the solvers who come to this blog. Most of you must be baby-boomers! When I was a child in the 40s and 50s Moira Shearer was one of the best known dancers in the country, partly because she was photogenic enough to star in films. “The Red Shoes” was the sort of film that everyone knew about and that most people had seen. In fact, when she married Ludovic Kennedy my reaction was “Who’s he?”. I once saw her playing Cordelia at the Bristol Old Vic (Eric Portman – he of the Forsythe Saga – was her Lear. I remember that she died a very graceful balletic death!) In real life she had a recent long obituary in the Times.) Re. today’s crossword. I got badly stuck in the NW. 55 minutes
        1. According to Wikipedia she retired from dancing in 1953 and last appeared in a studio movie in 1961. When I was a child in the 70s and 80s her star had faded somewhat!
          1. One of the things I most love about this blog is the way in one person’s “common knowledge” is another’s “obscure reference”. It’s nearly always a generational thing. In this case 10 years seems to have been long enough for Shearer to have been forgotten.
            1. Indeed. I did wonder briefly if anyone might have trouble with “character phoning home”, on the basis that if you weren’t a child in 1982 you might not have seen it. But I think everyone must have seen E.T.!
  12. I also filled in the bottom half first. Last in 4dn – also failed to see anagram until all checkers were in. Never heard of Shearer – not because I’m young, but ballet’s never been my thing. Took over an hour, but all correct.
  13. ‘Though best known for her part in The Red Shoes, Shearer’s finest hour on film comes in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s Tales of Hoffmann – a truly magnificent version of Offenbach’s opera.

  14. 46 minutes.
I found this extremely tough. Like others the bottom half went in easily but I went 20 minutes in the top half without solving a clue. This was largely because I put GEMMA in at 6dn. I was partly prompted by “self-regarding girl” for “Emma”, which I thought was neat, until I eventually had a proper look at the clue and realised it didn’t work.
Tons of unknowns today: too many to mention. At least I remembered AWEIGH from another appearance where it prompted some discussion I believe.
I still don’t understand “yes and no” in 7dn. Isn’t it completely superfluous?
I also don’t understand how a SLEEP OVER can be a result of a REVEILLE. Can anyone explain?
    1. In 7dn, the point is that yes, EWE is unaffected by “falling over” (i.e. being read backwards) but no, a ewe is not unaffected by falling over.  It’s superfluous inasmuch as the clue would have been complete without it, but it does add a potentially amusing picture to the barebones indication of a palindrome.

In 15dn, the result of a REVEILLE is not a SLEEP OVER but simply SLEEP OVER (cf. “game over”).

    2. I took 15d to mean that as a result of the bugle call sleep is over. I don’t get the yes and no in 7d either.
      1. Hi Olivia. I couldn’t answer your last message via livejournal due to something about privacy settings. Thanks for your concern, and all is well.
  15. I had the bottom half finished well before making inroads to the top, and it wasn’t until seeing the exceptionally well-hidden anagram at 4D that I got there. Very much in love with that clue, particularly after trying to make anagram after anagram of (THE,BOSSES,AS) for ages.

    SHEARER, DOGBERRY, MUSQUASH from wordplay.

  16. Same as others, dancing merrily through the bottom but coming a-cropper up top. I confess never having heard of the MUSQUASH and having to resort to aids. I got DOSSER and DOGBERRY from wordplay only, and held myself up for quite a while by trying NOTICEBOARD at 3D, before seeing BELITTLE. About 45 minutes for all that, and a nice puzzle. Regards.
  17. Really didn’t like this at all I’m afraid. Probably just me. Top half didn’t come so didn’t finish for the first time in some years. Don’t get 23 ac so help please!
    1. Horrified = AGHAST. Commander = AGHA (in Muslim countries, esp. under the Ottoman Empire, a military commander or official). ST (abbrev. for ‘stone’). The ‘goes down’ is (sorta) explained in the blog.
  18. Like martinfred, I, too, put PUSH ON. In my case it was because I couldn’t see the connection between “go forward” and PASS ON.
  19. 10:55 for me, taking simply ages to get going, but finishing reasonably briskly once I did so (apart from several seconds at the end spent justifying REGISTER. Nice puzzle.

A webcam is a video camera that feeds its images in real time to a computer or computer network, often via USB, ethernet, or Wi-Fi.

Their most popular use is the establishment of video links, permitting computers to act as videophones or videoconference stations. The common use as a video camera for the World Wide Web gave the webcam its name. Other popular uses include security surveillance, computer vision, video broadcasting, and for recording social videos .

Webcams are known for their low manufacturing cost and flexibility,[1] making them the lowest cost form of videotelephony. They have also become a source of security and privacy issues, as some built-in webcams can be remotely activated via spyware.
