T4TT 10th Anniversary Crosswords

As promised, we have a couple of specially compiled crosswords available to celebrate the 10th Anniversary. These were handed round at last night’s 10th Anniversary parties in London and New York, but if you couldn’t make it here’s a chance to have a crack at them.

One is from a professional setter, who in typical Times style shall remain anonymous for the time being. The other is from an occasional setter who lives in Sydney, so doesn’t comment much as they get the puzzles 5 weeks or so later than us. So, introducing Isla to these shores for the second puzzle.

They’re both available here in PDF format. I’ll post the solutions and a blog for them next weekend.

Mick Hodgkin was also there last night (aka Mick Twister, Twitter’s limerick maestro), and he’s knocked one up just for us:

This humblest of limerick rhymes
Exalts, praises, toasts and sublimes
The first blog involving
Top-notch cryptic solving
Let’s hear it for Times for the Times!

  1. Thank you for these. I think that after 9ac, we can guess who the professional setter is!
  2. Oh jiminy, that first one was so hard. We got there in the end at the pub, but it was a Herculean team effort… (or perhaps it was quite easy and we were all just very, very sloshed).
  3. We found the first quite hard, too, and tricky. A nice puzzle for a group: the better solvers went faster but some of the parsings benefited from the full team, amply fueled, and we never did agree or understand 22d. We voted victory to the setter. We held the second puzzle to work individually.

        1. Oh yes, that makes much more sense. I’d never have got this myself, but I was satisfied that it’s ARC ONE [discharge | a] “cycling” into EARCON by someone else’s persuasive arguments.
          1. Well, I’m glad of that as it’s exactly how I’ve parsed it in my blog (which will go up later tonight).
            1. I’m busy today so my blog of the Isla (Australian) puzzle will go up by noon NY time tomorrow.

  4. not sure which was which – one was labelled and one was not – but one was easy and one I am still staring at, having entered a few. Hope to get there before Andy blogs.
