For the past few years I’ve helped our TfTT contributor St John Daly (aka astonvilla1) with test solving, editing and publishing his annual political crossword for the site politicalbetting.com (which he has been producing since 2006). Quite a Christmas treat! I really enjoyed many but had to reveal quite a few where I was in the dark. John, when I tried to open help link it came up “no Google exiting application found”. Anyways much thanks to setter and John for unexpected Yule bonus!

I was able to access the solution blog on my daughter’s I-pad, I guess my phone was the problem. Glad I was able to get to understand and admire the clues I couldn’t solve.

I always enjoy these but I thought this year’s particularly good. The political theme adds a dimension of enjoyment and helped me solve some of the more difficult clues.
I didn’t understand the Egyptian god part of FORBES but just bunged it in with a shrug, thinking perhaps is was just a cryptic definition!

A bit late I know but just wanted to add my thanks for this puzzle which I mostly solved over the festive period. A lot of stuff I enjoyed but a particular nod to the jaw-jaw homophone. I was defeated by Forbes, my limited pantheon of Egyptian gods didn’t stretch to Bes and that also prevented me from seeing Brezhnev. Very entertaining though!
