ST 4272 (Sun 13 Apr) – Brain Teeser

Solving time: Would have been under 3 minutes but for an extra 10 or so on 14ac!

Even easier than last week, although frustratingly I stalled on 14ac (despite being fairly confident of the answer) as I couldn’t understand half of the clue. Perhaps another new PB for foggyweb?

* = anagram, “X” = sounds like ‘X’.

Across
6 R.A. + REST
9 TRADER; rev. of RED ART
10 EC + STATIC
11 CORKSCREW (cryptic definition) – I liked this.
13 I + AGO
14 TEES (double definition) – ‘river’ for ?E?S shouted ‘Tees’, but I wasn’t sure about ‘sand-hills’ so tried to find something better for a while. Even looking up ‘tee’ didn’t convince me, but I can’t find another river to fit so I think this is right. Maybe if I were a golfer I wouldn’t have thought twice about it.
15 GREAT DANES; (TEA-GARDENS)*
17 A + D[oor] + JUST (= ‘fitting’) + MENT (= “MEANT”) – ‘front door’ for ‘D’ made me squirm a bit.
21 LA(I)C
22 DISC (= ‘plate’) + ERNE + D[ay]
24 STIFFENS; F in (FITNESS)*
25 AN + DREW
27 DRILLS (double definition)
28 LIKE + WISE

Down
2 EARACHE (hidden)
3 RED (cryptic definition)
4 FORE (= “FOUR”) + SIGHTED + NESS
5 CLEAR (double definition)
6 RISE WITH THE LARK; (WITH HIKERS LATER)* – good anagram.
7 REALISATION (double definition) – I suppose you could also spell this with a ‘Z’.
8 SHINGLE (double definition) – this can mean a thin roof tile, as well as beach pebbles.
12 RESOURCEFUL; RE + (FOUR CLUES)*
16 EYE (double definition)
18 DR + AFTER (= ‘in search of’)
20 LADDERS (double definition) – almost a good clue, but the second definition needs a subject (‘…runners – they support…’ would work) or at least a question mark.
23 SISAL; I in rev. of LASS
26 DEW; rev. of WED[nesday]

  1. This from Wikipedia:

“The development of the tee was the last major change to the rules of golf. Before this, golf balls were teed up on little heaps of sand that was provided in boxes. This explains the historical name tee boxes for what is today known as teeing ground.”

  2. Not a new PB, unfortunately. Although still a quick 10m30s. I bunged in TEES because of the river, thanks to pros958 for the explanation.
  3. Good GK about Golf tees from our Welsh (presumably) correspondent. More recently we had sand hills being used to tee up rugby balls for penalty kicks and conversions before the plastic tee was introduced. Before the sand we had the likes of Bob Hillier tearing up the turf to make a launch pad for the ovoid projectile. It must have made the groundsman’s eyes water.

Just the 2 omissions from this blog:

1a Tremendous (rift Eric)* flies around (8)
    TERRIFIC

    19a Unemployed, I get led astray (4)
    I DLE
