Sloggers & Betters (Manchester), Saturday 8th September 2012.

Posted on Categories Weekend Cryptic
Actually this is what you might call Sloggers & Betters Plus, as it coincides with the 50th birthday celebrations of Anax/Loroso/Elkamere and will consist of two events.

Basic details
The daytime venue, from 12 noon, is the Stamford Arms in Bowdon, near Altrincham in Cheshire. It was recently discovered that this pub is no longer serving food; however there is a Chef & Brewer pub (The Griffin) right next door. It has been decided to keep the Stamford Arms as the main ‘gathering’ venue – it’s an independent pub, run by nice people, which has suffered somewhat with the chain (probably subsidised) nature of its neighbour, so it would be nice to support them.
In the evening, from around 7pm, Anax’s 50th birthday celebration will be in the form of his band playing at the nearby – about 50 yards away – Cinnamon Club. The band performance, of classic soul, funk and disco material, will last around 90 minutes and will be followed by a disco for those who want to dance the night away. It is appreciated that some will need to travel home after the S&B event, but the hope is that many/most will make a night of it at the Cinnamon Club, not least because it has cost a fair old wedge to hire the place!

Most people on Anax’s email list have been contacted (at the time of writing there are around 40 confirmed or very likely attendees) but all crossword fans are invited. There is an urgent need, however, to get a fairly accurate idea of numbers, for two reasons – The Griffin won’t be able to cope with a huge number of diners suddenly turning up, and the Cinnamon Club can accommodate a maximum of 110 in the upstairs room which has been booked. So please contact Anax directly at anaxcrosswords@yahoo.co.uk – and for more information about the event and its venues please visit his blog at http://anaxcrosswords.wordpress.com/2012/07/12/50th-a-few-more-details/

Hope you can be there!

  1. I live in NYC, where the Times Crosswords are reprinted in the New York Post. I realised there must be some lag in the schedule, but I hadn’t realised until I discovered this LJ (quite by accident) that the lag is 11 days! I’m tackling #25,222 now, which appeared in the Post on Friday 3-Aug, but which I now see originally appeared in the Times on Mon 23-Jul. I was googling “quick flurry of notes”; I already thought the solution must be “run-through”, and that there was a technical musical term in there, but was searching for what it might be, when this LJ’s entry for that puzzle came up.
    1. Welcome to the community from a fellow non UK-based solver, tho’ a Brit! If you’re willing to shell out 25 pounds a year on The Times Crosswords Club, you’ll get all the daily Times cryptics at 7pm EST – just the thing for a post-prandial solve – or pre-prandial, if you’re a late eater and/or a very quick solver! For the price, you’ll also get all their other word puzzles, most of which are blogged here.
    2. Hi fellow Gothamite solver. I’m a Brit who’s lived here a very long time but only started doing these puzzles fairly recently. I’d like to endorse Ulaca’s recommendation of the Times Crossword Club. At L25 a year it’s a steal compared with the NY Post and it includes an opinionated Forum and additional puzzles (concise, TLS, monthly etc.). Anax (whose party I will unfortunately not be attending) is aka Deane Mayer and sets the most fiendish Sunday puzzles every now and then.
      1. Whilst the Times Crossword Club is an excellent thing under normal circumstances, it sometimes develops hitches which are not expeditiously resolved. Since yesterday, some subscribers have not been able to gain access to the Club site and have to depend on other subscribers for their daily fix. I am still cut off … HELP !!!!
        1. I hope you’re no longer marooned Uncle Yap. My only and minor problem (which persists) is having to log in to the club each time. I understand from the club Forum that PeterB is in hot pursuit of a solution. I’d rather like to know what was the problem in the first place.
I’ve been out of internet range for a while until today but I see we have the well-known sherpa in today’s puzzle. Which reminds me of your Hessie joke from last Christmas.

  2. I’ve just made this post unsticky, as it seems to be attracting an inordinate number of spam comments!
