Monthly Club Special 20,240: Pooh Dreams

A quick look at the completed grid for this one should be enough to tell you if you are going to love or hate the Monthly Club Special: some people just won’t want to painstakingly construct words like QESHM, WAG-N-BIETJIE and LOK SABHA out of seemingly unpromising word-grist and that’s alright, it’s not compulsory. But for those of us irresistibly drawn to these most insane-looking vocab lattices, there were many feats of virtuosically devious cluing to enjoy. I personally loved the pair of beloved anthropomorphic animal clues at 12ac and 7dn, but will maybe assign COD to 27ac: “an economy… in the red” is just lovely. Thank you so much setter and apologies to readers that I didn’t define all of the below words. I assure you that a trip to the dictionary will be very enlightening, though, if anything still baffles…

  1. I was only able to do about 2/3 of this, before running out of available time. I am hoping it was an unusually difficult one, the alternative being that I am losing my touch! Looking at the blog, the ones I didn’t do don’t seem to be any more difficult than the ones I did..
I think it is the first one that I haven’t completed.
    1. Definitely felt on the harder end to me, but susceptible to dogged plugging away. It’s also quite fun doing hard MCS puzzles as a team effort over Angus’s crossword Zoom meetup I’ve found, if that isn’t cheating… If it is, forget I said anything.
  2. Another good puzzle which took me rather than longer than usual. I particularly liked slug-foot-second as well as oenomancy.
  3. I enjoyed this, I think… It has “Too Hard” written at the top of my paper copy, and I think I parsed everything…eventually. Sadly I had a transcription error from paper to online resulting in a pink square(FUDDLE CUP instead of CAP for 2D). Really annoying when that happens with something that takes so long to finish. No time recorded as it took me several sessions. Count me another who liked SLUG-FOOT-SECOND and OENOMANCY.. the latter has me thinking of a new career. I assume you get to drink the wine afterwards.
    1. Or even before? My own oenomancy career would not start until the third glass, at least.. like you I can see a whole new vista opening up here.
