Given my ignorance of such matters I was extremely pleased to guess this early in the proceedings with only the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 11th checkers in place!
Hmm. There are two equally valid spellings of 12ac and I’ve picked the wrong one. I hope the judging panel allows a bit of leeway in this case.
Good puzzle, though, very tough.
Yes, without the clue to go by I picked the wrong spelling too. Not sure if the names are interchangeable for crossword purposes as one version seems to require a hyphen.
And the “on” in the clue makes it clear which one is indended. While we’re on the subject, who is the least popular person in said place’s football crowd? The one who shouts: “Give us a B…”.
how does one complain about the times website mistakes. they seem to happen frequently and one doesnt even get an apology from them?
You could try the Times online editor-in-chief – e-mail address listed here.
Thanks for the tip–as well as for the clue. I notice that they’ve corrected the online version, but without any acknowledgement, let alone apology, in the Bulletin Board. I’m not terribly hopeful, but I hope lots of us do e-mail the editor. It’s only been a year or so since I’ve been able to solve virtually every puzzle–in time–but this one undermined any feeling of confidence that I had about my abilities. Finally finished it just now; so maybe I can get some work done today, after all.
