Mephisto 3430 – Thanks and a hat tip to Harold Bloom

Posted on Categories Mephisto

This Robert Teuton was not terribly difficult to solve, but I had a few difficulties with the parsing.   Our setter does like to remove parts of words, and has thrown in several &lit clues as well.

A vocabulary is definitely useful here.   I nearly biffed psittacine, but I had to check Chambers for the correct spelling.    I somehow remembered the Japanese temple gateways and the Scottish spider, as well as the Greek ὕλη.   The ani is native to vowel-hungry US puzzles, and gave away in a heartbeat.   I did have to do a couple of dictionary searches to finish, but nothing major.   And you?

Across
1 Go in after Barbadian military officer (8)
BIMBASHI – BIM + BASH + I’.   The Barbadian is evidently from Bimshire.   The officer, however, is from Turkey.
7 Plan of route for climb over adjoining summit (4)
TOPO –  TOP + O, for a bit of mountaineering slang.
10 One close to fighting jockey round fields (9)
RINGSIDER –  R(INGS)IDER.
11 Beginning to overhaul unaltered haven (5)
OASIS – O[verhaul] + AS IS.
13 Intending to ditch Ann! (5)
PLING –  PL[ann]ING.   Note the underline under the !, because that’s what a pling is.
14 Bodies of women, some such as sisterhoods? (7)
CHASSIS –  Hidden in [su]CH AS SIS[terhoods].   Chassis is both singular and plural, depending on the pronunciation.
16 Salmon carrion around lake (4)
KELT – KE(L)T.    Two words I didn’t know, but the first three letters are checked.
17 Inclination’s hard to leave bowler’s deliveries holding length (8)
CLINAMEN – C(-h,+L)INAMEN.   The plural for this interesting delivery is not given in Chambers, but it seems likely enough.
18 Remedy GP noted as a form of stress relief (10)
ADAPTOGENS – Anagram of GP NOTED AS A.
20 Work unit turning to prattle on about male intellect (10, two words)
GREY MATTER – ERG backwards + Y(M)ATTER.

PIED – PI[c[oo]k]ED.
26 Clue resolved in the box headed “soup bowl” (7)
ECUELLE – E(angram of CLUE)LE.   I don’t quite see what is going on here, but I’m sure that some erudite (or lucky) commenter will.
28 Tournament I would follow to mock half-heartedly (5)
JERID – J[e]ER + I’D.   A wooden javelin in Turkey, or the contest in which such are used.
29 On reflection starts to like Y-fronts in this material (5)
HYLIC – H(L[ike], Y[-fronts] backwards)IC.
30 Who’s involved with stuff injected into arm possibly? (9)
MAINLINER – MA(INLINE)R, where the enclosing letters are an anagram of ARM.    I interpret inline to mean non-extraneous, as inline code as opposed to a subroutine.
31 Move up past one delivering mail leaving Post Office (4)
STIE – [po]STIE.   Stie is more often spelt sty, and is now a dialect word.

25 Useless son leaving to go furtively (4)
IDLE – [s]IDLE.
