Mephisto 3173 – Tim Moorey

Posted on Categories Mephisto
Greetings barred-grid fans

This is a classic Tim Moorey puzzle, a few cultural references, crafty wordplay and some fun surfaces. I did find this a little more difficult than the previous few weeks, not helping myself by being utterly unable to spell some of the stranger words (4 and 35 in particular, both words I have run across in other puzzles).

I’m writing this up in advance since I know I will not be around on Sunday morning, so if I’ve slipped up on anything, please check comments first.

Away we go…

  1. ….than most of Tim’s offerings, and finished it in 19 seconds less than an hour. The only real problem was the dumplings, where it took me a while to realise that I’d transposed the E and I.
  2. Mid-level difficulty, like Phil I had just under an hour on the clock and it took me a while to realise I had the E and I transposed in the dumpling. Never heard of the movie.
  3. I think 7d is meant to be LIART (reversal of TRAIL for wake), rather than LIARD.

At least, I put LIARD in my submission, and it is now showing a pink square for the D.

But either would work, more or less.

  4. LIART is the intended answer. LIARD is defined in Chambers as “to draggle”, which in turn is “to trail”. But “trail” meaning the same as “wake” is a noun, not a verb. So I cannot see any need to tell the people doing the draw that they need to accept LIARD as an alternative correct answer.
    1. I might argue on LIART/D as I had the latter, but I also had a pink square at the end of KOREROS, where I had what appears to be a fat finger A. So I wouldn’t be troubling the scorers.
