Mephisto 3135 – Paul McKenna

Posted on Categories Mephisto

I remember doing this on Sunday afternoon on a pretty glorious day, but don’t remember that much about the solving process. Chalk that up to a round of golf the previous day where I took advantage of the facilities of the club to a great extent (if you are in this part of the world I highly recommend the Sevierville Golf Course in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee).

The pun in the top row does describe most of my last six months.

In Mephisto puzzles, definitions (underlined) can be confirmed in Chambers so I will be focusing on the wordplay here.

  1. ….and no memory of the solving process. It took me just over an hour in two sittings though, and I fell into the “nyssu” trap described by Vinyl. I was using Chambers, but didn’t check it.
  2. ‘Go me’? Now that is preposterous. And mobile and supple aren’t interchangeable. Mr Grumpy
    1. I can assure you there are days when my knee joints are neither supple nor mobile! Chambers Thesaurus lists supple under mobile, and I think it must be in that sort of sense.
  3. So nearly the first time I’d finished one correctly without recourse to aids but I fell into the NYSSU trap. Pah!
  4. 1hr 20, which is not bad for me for one of Paul’s. I liked the topical pun across the top. The RHS fell in first and I finished in the NW corner, where 2D, 4D and 5D took me a while to parse. I was pleased to avoid the NYSSU trap by checking my answer and finding the right one. KIANG made me smile. Thanks Paul and George.
  5. I found this quite easy, finishing in one half-hour session. I checked NYSSU so didn’t fall into the trap but didn’t understand the clue, so thanks for explaining it.
    GO ME raised a smile.
  6. This may have been one of the simpler Mephistos (sc one in which I knew most the vocab). I got through with minimal Chambering (NYSSA, thank goodness) in 26 minutes. ST cryptics have taken longer.
The downside is that I missed both the pun at the top (brilliant) and the GO ME bit of gladsome, happy that all that singing of “Let us with a gladsome mind” years ago finally came in useful.
