Mephisto 3094 – by Don Manley

Unless you’re very experienced you are unlikely to solve a Mephisto without using Chambers. The idea is that you use the precise wordplay to derive an answer that you then verify in the dictionary.  10A is a perfect example.

A puzzle of no more than average difficulty

In the clues, definitions are underlined. Wordplay explanation is followed by very helpful comments.

A happy and peaceful Christmas to all at TFTT

  1. Yes. I think this was about average difficulty too. I had to look elsewhere than Chambers to find PINGLE and had to do a dictionary trawl to find CAPONIERE, knowing neither the answer nor the love letter in the wordplay. I hate it when the missing letter is the first one in a clue like that. Thanks Don and Jimbo.
      1. Ah. I see on checking online it is in the list of words accidentally missed out from the paper edition I have. I must remember to check that, but I try and solve with just my paper copy and no other aids. Didn’t manage that today, though, which I found at least twice as hard as this.
  2. I found this remarkably easy. I don’t usually time Mephistos because I tend to do them in several sittings but I did this in one go in 20 minutes, which is highly unusual.
  3. 8… make that 9. Is that a record number of comments on the Mephisto blog for the year? Thanks Jimbo and George for the perseverance.
    1. You’re welcome John and thanks for commenting

In my early days blogging Mephisto after a blog that received no comments I did toy with the idea of putting up a spoof blog rather than the real thing to see if anybody would notice. Luckily common sense prevailed!
