Mephisto 3077 – Tim Moorey

I found this one a touch more tricky than recent Mephistos, and my last one in was the place name across the top with which I was not familiar.

Usually I find Tim Moorey’s wordplay the most easy to follow of the trio of Mephisto setters, but I have a few that do not make crystal clear sense to me.

Definitions can be verified in Chambers, and so I will focus on the wordplay in the clues.

Away we go…

Across

  1. No time recorded, but it took me more than one sitting. I note I got all the way to 7D reading through the clues before I was able to answer one.I had ERM? for 1A. “What” derived by TERM without its beginning. It’s only when 1D proved impossible that I realised it was wrong. As for PERNOD, it’s ages since I’ve had any pastis, but my preference is for Ricard.
By the way George, you didn’t finish the parsing of 20A “…removing the O for ordinary and an anagram of RICH”
    Thanks Tim and George.
  2. My last one in was LEGO, because nothing else would fit and the wordplay worked, but I would have to hide the definition from my fanatically committed master builder grandson, whose creative prowess with the massively overpriced Danish plastic is anything but Jerry-building.
