Mephisto 3067 – Don Manley

Posted on Categories Mephisto
A fine Mephisto for wordplay, which is to be expected from Don Manley, where my usual approach is wordplay first, and then check the definition. It also helped in this one that two of the more unusual words are very familiar to me.

Definitions, which are underlined can all be confirmed in Chambers, so I will focus on the worplay in the blog.

  1. The “Little old” at the start of 13A had me confused, but I got the answer from the checkers and my dictionary. I had REVERE as the answer to 14A at first, which gave me trouble in the NE corner. MENEER, when he revealed himself, reminded me of schooldays in South Africa and how we addressed our teachers formally there. Otherwise, only not knowing TUMBREL as the cart at 20D stopped me parsing all. An entertaining puzzle. Thanks Don and George.
  2. Typo at 22a. a for d. I can’t do the puzzle I just read the blog to be amazed.
  3. Ta – I can solve them but I can typo like nobody’s business. Really you should be able to do the puzzle, it is kind of the reverse of the daily, think wordplay first and check definition, rather than find definition and think of a word that matches the wordplay.
