Mephisto 3011 – Tim Moorey

I didn’t have too much difficulty with this one, and I thought the design of the grid was very solver friendly, with a lot of thre letter strings in checked letters.

It was an interesting choice of wor at 9 down and 26 down – with DEA?  leading to six possibilities in Chambers I wonder why the least familiar (at least to me) was chosen, similarly for the 13 possibilities for ?ING

  1. Surely unfamiliar words fairly clued are of the essence of Mephisto and Azed! I expect Tim will have clued DEAR etc. many times in daily puzzles. Why the puzzlement?
  2. Thanks for the blog but I still don’t understand 18ac. Where did the LICE in Anglice disappear to? I’ve looked for ANG in Collins, Chambers and Shorter Oxford without success. And , what happened to George?
    1. Ang. has a separate entry in Chambers: Anglice (L), in English. No idea who George is though…

      Midas

  3. George, I think you have to take AD, not just A, out of the anagram. And, ON is part of the wordplay, not definition.
  4. Couldn’t parse HEWN so thanks for explaining. For I while I wondered if 5d was SHAKESPEARE… Leicester City had a manager called Craig Shakespeare for 4 months in 2017.
