Well, at least the other three quadrants were correct – and there’s a new Mephisto today!
And always be very wary of biffing with these puzzles. I solve with Chambers to hand (the app on my iPhone is handy) and check all the elements if I’m not sure, which is often.
I also struggled mightily in the SE, partly for the same reason. There were a couple of clues I only got by hypothesising what the first three or four letters might be and then trawling Chambers. Not the most exciting way of solving, but sometimes I find it’s necessary when I hit a wall.
