  1. I did this on a train from Paris to Dijon en route for Beaune: my version of a pilgrimage. I found it pretty straightforward but there were three I couldn’t parse:
    – 24ac where I missed the meaning of ‘tearing up’
    – 32ac, which I didn’t understand at all, and I still struggle with ‘one exuding’ as an instruction to remove I
    – 26dn where I didn’t understand how a FIFER is a ‘supposedly cranky type’… and I still don’t!
    1. 26d from Chambers: under “fife: FIFER – a fife-player; under “Fifish: cranky – FIFERS – people from Fife

This generalisation about Fife is quite well known and goes with all the other generalisations about Yorkshire, Belgium, Canada, et al

      1. Thanks: that’s a new one on me! I probably would have seen this if I had been using the printed Chambers, but when I searched for FIFER on my iPhone edition it didn’t show up. Funnily enough if I search for FIFERS it does show up, because the definition of FIFISH says ‘supposed qualities of Fifers, inhabitants of Fife‘.
P.S. Not sure what generalisation about Canada you’re thinking of but I won’t tell my wife!
